What little things disproportionately improve your quality of life?

I know that the big things (secure housing, relationships and finances, good physical and mental health) make all the difference. But I just turned on the car radio and it got me thinking about the small, inexpensive things that make life so much better. Here are mine:

Radio 4
The Sunday Times
Having a lovely coffee shop next to the small office I rent
Cheese from the market
Having a village library
Good footpaths nearby
An open fire
Being able to go swimming each week ( roll on Wednesday!)
Baths
Gardener's World and Call My Agent (French comedy drama)
Being on a good bus route (I'm now down to only one school run, thank God)
Brogues and colourful tights

What are yours'?

A bus route and footpaths would improve my life immeasurably, although sadly I have neither. But I'd agree with you on including them in the list.

Being able to cook and enjoying doing so. That's a big one for me.

SenecaFallsRedux · 30/11/2020 15:17

Really good coffee, especially the first cup in the morning.

Appuskidu · 30/11/2020 15:18

Definitely agree with you on baths! Especially baths with nice bubbles in.
I also love Gardner’s World (and Paul/Bob go fishing).
Cups of tea. Particularly when brought to me in bed at the weekend. With toast!
Freshly changed bedding.
The smell/sound of someone else cooking the dinner!
The lawn having been mown-either by me or by someone (anyone) else.

The small things making my life better right now are:

  • firelogs instead of fire lighters
  • my air fryer
  • my new freezer (how have I been living for the past 7 years without one?)
AdoptedBumpkin · 30/11/2020 15:23

To name a few...

Hot soup on cold days
Nature walks with DD
Friendly welcome in the local shop
The sound of rain on the roof

The banal letters in the local paper Grin

midlifecrash · 30/11/2020 15:23

large mature trees in the streets

Toilenstripes · 30/11/2020 15:25

It's been down for a few days. Hopefully back to normal now.
I've been listening to some cracking R4 plays tho.

Piles of lovely fabric waiting to be transformed into clothes.

No road works on the main road into work
Space near the entrance in the car park
Nobody off sick
Enough qualified staff to cope
All my patients still breathing when I hand over
None of my staff in tears or shaking.
Steaming hot shower before I leave.
A day off to myself
Sex on a sunday morning

Sometimesonly · 30/11/2020 15:36

Living above a coffee shop - I like to pop down after lunch.
My annual bus pass (work subsidized) means I can get any bus anywhere in the city. Love bus passes!
My local bike shop that pumps my tyres up for a euro, lazy I know but I hate doing it.
My local shops including my absolutely favourite shop that weighs out everything (mainly sweets and chocolate) on old scales.
Radio 4!

WankmasterBastardDeLaShithead · 30/11/2020 15:36

About six months ago we got a big, deep-pile rug from Ikea to cover the wooden floor in our bedroom/sitting room. I absolutely love walking around the sofa bed, and feeling the squishy fluffiness under my bare feet.

WankmasterBastardDeLaShithead · 30/11/2020 15:38

Oh, and similar to winechateauxjoy, I have a huge drawer full of gorgeous colourful yarns, waiting to be crocheted.

Sometimesonly · 30/11/2020 15:39

Also, slightly outing but we have a local shop called the House of Zips where they specialize in.....zips. Grin They have repaired many a bag or coat for me and saved it from being prematurely abandoned.

leafinthewind · 30/11/2020 15:40

The dishwasher!

mangoandraspberries · 30/11/2020 15:43

Following with interest! I’ve had a rough few days and need a few easy pick me ups!

WishingHopingThinkingPraying · 30/11/2020 15:44

Coffee machine
Boiling water tap
Handheld Dyson
Electric blanket
Having a stock of cards for all occasions
Having a pile of dinner money envelopes handy
A smelly candle to occasionally light when I've tidied my bedroom
A takeaway every Saturday night
Sausages, beans and chips for dinner every Sunday night
Cashmere socks
My apple slicer
Having sliced pan in the freezer always
Netflix
The collapsible shopping box I keep in the boot if my car

I'm sure there's many many more

Living in a city but with plenty of green space. I live in a very walkable neighborhood with lots of trees, parks and footpaths. But, I can also walk to local shops and restaurants.

Especially having three coffee shops and a bakery in the vicinity. I love good coffee and fresh bread. 😋

AnyFucker · 30/11/2020 15:51

Tiger bread and butter

Coldemort · 30/11/2020 15:53

Fresh flowers every week even if they are only £2 from Aldi!
Cat snuggles

I was madly jealous of all the lucky posters living near a coffee shop but a coffee shop and bakery? You're just showing off AmI!! Grin

God I miss people watching in coffee shops.

DinkBoo · 30/11/2020 15:55

A hot water bottle. Grin

itchyfinger · 30/11/2020 15:57

Nespresso machine.

A lot of coffee mentions I notice!

muddledmidget · 30/11/2020 15:57

A daily walk to see the sea (I never appreciated my local area before).

Good oil and salt for my food.

Good red wine.

My lovely neighbour delivering copious amounts of chopped wood for my fire.

Brushed cotton bedding for the nights now it's getting chilly.

My new combo boiler so I can have a hot bath without planning an hour or two ahead!

H1978 · 30/11/2020 15:58

A triple chocolate muffin, guaranteed to perk me up Grin and a hug from my dcs.
