Outdoor ideas for Christmas entertaining

My dad has decided he thinks meeting up indoor this Christmas is too risky, which is a surprise because he loves Christmas, being with family and especially hosting at Christmas.

Mum has a serious health scare early in the year which puts her in the CV category and they're both late 70s, but it's surprised me that they're being so cautious.

So we'll have Christmas dinner in our separate households but hope to get together for some outdoor festivities. They're both quite hardy and happy to wrap up and be out in any weather.

So far my best ideas, none of which I love are:

-Mulled wine and marshmallows around the Fire Pit in the garden.
-Long walk and festive picnic
-poker night under the patio canopy

I will say here make sure that your garden paths are really well lit, I know from my own oldies that depth perception at night can go awry.

Right now that's out of the way, I really like all three of your suggestions.

Take your summer picnic blanket with waterproof backing to use on a damp picnic bench seat. A jolly tablecloth can really lift a picnic to party levels.

Have fun!

We are going on a Christmas Day out next weekend but the restaurants are all takeout only obviously so we are planning a Christmas themed picnic - turkey and stuffing sandwiches, Christmas cake, Christmas cookies, a flask of mulled wine and pigs in blankets are just some of our ideas so far.

I think yabu to think they are being over cautious if your mum has had a health scare and you should respect their wishes. Wrap up warm and enjoy able to still have your partner and their health

I don't think they're being over cautious. I think they're doing the right thing, I'm just slightly surprised at their decision against a history of thinking they're invincible. Mum's scare has clearly shaken them more than I realised.

So what are you moaning about? If you don’t like their suggestions suggest what you do want to do with them?

Go for a walk early evening to see Christmas lights. Maybe take travel mugs of hot chocolate.

I think just tea and christmas cake in the afternoon would be nice with the fire and just have a chat and a walk.
