Sofa bed - what would you recommend or avoid?

Looking for a sofa bed that is comfy as a sofa and as a bed. In my experience they are often not that comfy as either Grin
Would also like to not spend an absolute fortune...

Bump!

My advice based on your title was going to be "choose whether you want a comfy bed or a comfy sofa as it's unlikely to be both". Sorry if that's unhelpful. We have a full height Aerobed which we decided was a better option for us (only space for one sofa)

MyOtherProfile · 29/11/2020 20:12

Well that probably confirms my suspicions thanks!

How much space do you have? We gave up and got a comfy sofa and then a separate air mattress (John Lewis, can't remember its name sorry). If we push all the furniture right to the edge of the room then there's space for the air mattress.

MyOtherProfile · 30/11/2020 11:18

I prefer that idea except the sofa bed would be used by our aged relative so not sure she could get down to an air bed unfortunately.

You can get a tall version OP if I remember correctly.

We have the low one but it's only us or the kids who use it. Would be rather low for an older person I agree.

I've been searching for a compact sofabed for our study - which is not huge - but I think I'm just going to settle for the airbed as we only need it occasionally. It's very comfortable. And plugs in to inflate so quick to set up.

We have a DFs sofa bed and it's very comfy as a sofa. To be honest you cannot tell which is just a sofa and which is the sofa bed version. I can't say I've slept on the sofa bed, but the one guest to comment said it was very comfortable. I put a padded mattress protector ontop of the thin mattress. The frame seems pretty sturdy. It's only been used a couple of times though and weighs a tonne. We do have a spare room, with a spare proper bed but that will need to go so we can put in a bed for DS shortly so our sofa bed will be the only option. Do make sure you hoover the crumbs out before guests arrive as it's a bit grim otherwise

We have the Loco

But the Levi is very similar too

We got one from John Lewis - it was last year so we were able to go in and look at it. It has a much thicker mattress than some of them do. It’s obviously not as comfy as an actual bed but fine for a few nights.
It’s not the most comfy sofa I’ve been on - but it’s fine .

The air bed we have is quite tall, sort of like a divan. My arthritic MIL can sleep on it. As has my auntie who is in her mid 70s although she is pretty fit and healthy.

TeachMakan · 28/05/2021 21:10

@MyOtherProfile which did you go for? Or does anyone else have a recommendation based on recent experience? We are moving to a house and the spare/guest room will mostly need to be an office. Not sure whether to go for a sofa bed or air bed.
Thanks Smile

My friend has an IKEA daybed that converts into the comfiest bed. You would NEVER know it was a sofa bed. No idea how comfortable it is as a sofa though, sorry.

JanFebAnyMonth · 28/05/2021 21:21

I have the York - with the optional memory foam mattress - from Sofabed Barn in Bradford. It’s fab as a bed and fine as a sofa if you like quite hard sofas.

Used them after getting a recommendation on MN!

Alpenguin · 28/05/2021 21:26

I wouldn’t get the bed height air mattress for an older relative. My MIL has a John Lewis one and we were forever rolling off the ends as it slowly deflated through the night (no hole just expected deflation according to JL)

Twistiesandshout · 28/05/2021 21:34

I love this one, we have had it a few years now in the playroom/spare room cheap and cheerful and pretty comfortable for a night or two. www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/friheten-corner-sofa-bed-with-storage-with-extra-back-cushions-hyllie-dark-grey-s59326247/

Was also going to suggest this. They are really nice

We got a nice sofa and a couple of spare futon mattresses!

What about a murphy bed / wall bed? They’re pricey, but you can disguise them with cabinetry and nobody would ever know it was a bed until you pull it down. Then you have the space for a proper sofa which just needs to be pushed aside when you have overnight guests. We have one in the spare room as my parents are getting older and can’t be expected to sleep on (get up from!) an air mattress or low sofa bed.

BertieBotts · 29/05/2021 12:49

We have an amazonbasics airbed, it's as tall as a normal bed and self inflating (has plug). I lent it to a friend and her elderly father slept on it with no issues at all.

Much more comfy than the sofa bed.

BertieBotts · 29/05/2021 12:50

And nothing like those old camping airbeds!

b1990 · 29/05/2021 12:52

we have the Dreams HAZE sofabed, for 2 months now..
used it twice as a bed (no complaints) and daily as a sofa.

Happy so far.

Getting a mattress topper for extra comfort for longer than 1 night stays too.

TeachMakan · 30/05/2021 21:20

Thank you! Such a minefield. Guests need to be comfortable, but I don’t want to use up all space with a bed, and lots of ideas here. Definitely food for thought.
