Moving to Luxembourg - what do I need to know!?

We are moving to Luxembourg just after Xmas. If anyone has done similar (with children in tow) please let me know of any tips on things to do/avoid. My husband’s office is out toward the airport but we’ll be looking to live in the west of the city to be close to schools. Thanks!!

Have you been to Luxembourg for a visit?

Maomoo · 29/11/2020 14:49

I haven’t no. My husband has been a number of times with work and has a number of work colleagues out there already. I’m going in a bit blind so slightly nervous. It’s not a permanent move though so worth the risk.

I only ask as I found it a strange place when I visited. I would definitely recommend you visit before you commit to moving, although I appreciate that with COVID that might not be easy.

It’s quite a nice place, with a very high standard of living but expensive. It’s become very international and public transport is very good and free. It’s also very safe and there are lots of pretty places to explore.

You’ll be fine Smile

I’m imagining your kids will go to an international or European style school, but you might find that they they struggle with the languages as they are taught to a very high standard. It might be worth looking at classes now so they don’t have such a hard adjustment.

Thanks for the replies. We would have gone over but Covid has made that very difficult. We’ll be going to an English speaking international school and I have arranged extra french lessons for both my children and myself (I don’t speak a jot!).

@Maomoo don’t worry about not visiting. DH got a job in Geneva and I moved here having never been to Switzerland before and not speaking any French.

Obviously I can’t help with your question about Luxembourg but I wanted to tell you that it’s an exciting adventure and to enjoy it. Exploring your new home is fun. I always say, if it doesn’t work you just come home!

There's a lovely Indian cafe at 1, Avenue de la Gare called Nirvana café. Very reasonably priced too.

I only stayed overnight so not much else I can offer other than if you need a lovely, dog-friendly hotel 😁

It's boring AF loads of people speak English.
My husband was interviewing and they switched the location up last minute and offered him a job there for 150k plus bonus.
We went for a weekend and regretfully declined.

Sounds like its a done deal so id just make sure you have your own a car and do weekend trips to Germany the rheingau is stunning loads of cute places to visit.
Mainz, wiesbaden etc are v cute

Thanks @LongPauseNoAnswer! I’m taking the same mindset. We can always go home if it doesn’t work out.

Im expecting it to be a little dull but am looking forward to lots of weekend trips across the borders!

You declined going to Luxembourg for £150k+ a year?

I'd go to prison for that. Grin

I lived there for 18 months and didn't really enjoy it. The countryside is beautiful and there is a good system of trails and hikes if you are into the outdoors. The rest of it is just a bit quiet and dull, shopping is expensive and limited - lots of designer type shops, I used to go to Trier, over the border in Germany if I needed clothes.
I would definitely give it a try though if it's only a temporary contract. In my experience, English was very widely spoken, often I would order a coffee in French and they would reply back in English.

We've moved to trier 8 years ago, husband works in Luxembourg and the kids are in the German education system but a lot of our social life takes place in Lux. Yes it can be a bit dull but it's also a bit quirky.
