Do I get this cat or not?

I currently have an elderly dog. My circumstances changed quite a lot during his lifetime and I now work full time, albeit often from home now. He sleeps a lot but I have always said I will get a cat after him as it wouldnt be fair to get another dog.

I commute to work by train from a tiny station that has a small factory next to it. I know the factory had problems with feral cats a few years ago but not now. There is always a cat outside the factory who I think is fed by the staff there. She is a lovely little thing and always miaows loudly when you call her. I have started arriving early for my train as she climbs on my lap for a cuddle and happy dribbles and pads at me until my train arrives.

She may be taken in at night by staff or even taken home by someone but I cant help wondering what if she isnt and was thinking about asking about her at the factory with the view to maybe adopting her if they agree. I cant bear the thought of her being alone in the cold as she is such a cuddle cat.

But my dog doesnt like cats. He has lived with a cat at a friend's house when we went on holiday but he generally doesnt like them and he would be jealous. I want his last years / months to be as happy as possible

Also although Dp has said its ok to get the cat if we are allowed, he actually has no clue about the reality of cats and I forsee arguments if the cat scratches the furniture etc.

What would you do? It may be a moot argument if the factory says no. But its only going to get colder and what if they say yes. Maybe I shouldn't ask at all. Help me wise mumsnetters please!

Not if your dog doesn't like cats. Not fair on either of them.

SwampyArmpits · 29/11/2020 12:42

Agree with PP. She's lovely - and I'd be tempted in your shoes, too, OP - but, as PP said, it wouldn't be fair on either of them.

She looks happy and well taken care of, anyway, whatever her circumstances are, and there's no harm in asking the factory whether anyone takes her in at night if that would help put your mind at ease Smile

What makes you think she doesn't have a home? Is there no houses near the factory?
People often assume cats who enjoy food and cuddles are homeless but more often than not they do have homes and just enjoy the extra attention and food!

If you have a dog that doesn't like cats, and is likely to bark at and scare the cat, then it's not going to be fair on either of them.

I'm not sure that cat is homeless either. She / he looks in pretty good condition for a stary.

KitKat1985 · 29/11/2020 12:51

*stray not stary!

Thrownaway · 29/11/2020 12:53

She looks like she has a home due to her condition.

Ask around including on local facebook.

Regular posts pop up about two cats near me (one hangs around a busy bus stop and the other a hospital) both have homes and cat flaps!. In some ways it's sort of endearing how many people try to offer them homes.

Read that back to yourself ^^ and there's your answer.

If you're worried about the cat's welfare, speak to the factory staff and help them arrange a collection from a cat rescue.

Thrownaway · 29/11/2020 12:54

Whoops not sure why that's come up twice!

MegaClutterSlut · 29/11/2020 13:00

I wouldn't especially as your dog doesn't like cats, it would be unfair on him. Also as others said the cat may well have a home, I wouldn't just take it

Dullardmullard · 29/11/2020 13:04

The cat isn’t a stray to well care for, for that

Cats are not loyal they’ll go where the food source is too.

Cheeseandlobster · 29/11/2020 13:05

There are no houses near the station at all. Its a weird station really. Everyone who uses it drives to it as it is quicker to park here than to drive into the nearest city.

She is in great condition generally. She has developed a big wart on her head though and she was jumpy and not herself a few weeks ago which made me wonder if someone had kicked her, but most of the time she looks like your typical cat.

My dog wouldn't bark at her but he wouldnt like to share a home with her. I know I need to put him first.

I think I will ask the factory but more in a general way rather than with a view to offering her a home. The ideal would be if they said it was a member of staffs cat who comes to work with them every day and is loved and wanted. I just worry about her as she adores people and it would be really sad if she didnt have her own person to love

Ask around your local FB group. There are always people on there willing to come out and quickly scan for a microchip.

Frownette · 29/11/2020 13:22

I like your description of how she greets you.

Shame it's not the right circs for you to take her, but if you find out a bit more you can try to assist with finding her a home, if necessary

Cheeseandlobster · 29/11/2020 13:38

I think I will ask at the factory first and then will ask on Facebook if she doesnt actually belong to someone there. I just want her to be happy and loved
