Applying for a child’s passport as a single mum

I am thinking of taking my little one on our first holiday abroad. However I am not sure if I will actually be allowed. Do you need their Dad’s permission?

I haven’t seen him since February and I don’t want to ask him as he would say no as he likes to have control. He does have parental responsibility.

You do not need permission if you are only leaving the country for less than 10 days. I did not need LO's father's permission to apply for his passport but we are married so I do not know if there is a difference

28 days*

I only want to be able to go on an ordinary holiday so that would be fine. Do I need a letter giving his permission to go on holiday? I read somewhere that you can be stopped at the airport without it.

What does it say on the gov.uk website?

You don't need a letter from him - I have been on holiday lots with my son (different surnames) and only once has it been suggested that "perhaps I should carry a letter from his dad", I don't intend to get one though.

Thank you.

I have looked on the .gov.uk website and it says you need both parents details but it doesn’t expand on that.

Technically yes you do unless you have a court order that states the child lives with you. You may get away without it, but do risk being turned back.

If you want to go by the book, formally ask him for permission in writing. If not given then go to court for a specific issue order. Better still get a court order detailing her residence. Then you can have 28 days without needing his permission.

You don't need his permission to apply for a passport.
