Why do I always have a head ache at the weekend?

I was putting it down to reducing alcohol tolerance with age, although I don't drink a lot, it is customary for me to have a couple if glasses of wine on a Friday and Saturday night.

The last few weeks, I've been fine during the week but come Saturday morning I have a headache that stays until Sunday night. This weekend I haven't had a drink at all but I still have the headache.

It's so bad today that I'm wondering if it could be flu (or that other thing people are talking about) but it feels just like it did last weekend and I've been fine in between.

I have a responsible job but nothing I find excessively stressful and nothing's changed

I find it’s sleeping later at weekends. If I’m not up by 7 I’ll get a headache for the day. It’s annoying getting up early on days off but it seems to stop the migraines

Callipygion · 29/11/2020 11:16

Me too, I often get them at weekends or on days off. They are often migraine-y though, and make me feel nauseous, though not always. Got one now. I thought it might be because I was using my iPad more because of lockdown and maybe needed new glasses, but I’ve had my eyes tested last week and they are ok. Probably stress release type thing?

Not everyone is light sensitive with migraines. I very rarely am and I have tonnes of migraines.

And even if you are, doesn't mean you can't Mumsnet!

Forgot screens - I have bluelight filters on my home screens.

Do you sleep on later? I always get headache if I sleep in past my normal time.

BecomeStronger · 29/11/2020 11:54

I.don't set an alarm at the weekends but I wouldn't say I sleep a lot later, my bladder wakes me up about normal time anyway Grin

I sometimes wake in the night with them thumping so I get up and have a drink of water in case I’m dehydrated. But it’s still there in the morning.

Me and DH were just discussing this very subject. We are wondering if the bedroom is too dry. Without fail on Saturdays I wake up around 4am with a banging headache, dry throat and inability to breathe through one nostril.

cretelover · 29/11/2020 12:54

Could it be from getting up later at the weekends?

cretelover · 29/11/2020 12:55

Sorry just seen that you've addressed that, even lying in bed not asleep does me

Chemenger · 29/11/2020 13:31

Two things are guaranteed to bring on a migraine for me: a stressful deadline - I can be sure that as soon as I sit down to concentrate the aura will start (luckily it never lasts more than half an hour now) - and the first day of a holiday. Never while we’re travelling, always on the first full day when that feeling of relaxation starts and I feel stress ebbing away, that’s when the sparkly patch appears. It could be the lack of stress at the weekend that’s causing your headaches.

Anything that is different from your routine? Less caffeine or water perhaps? I gave up drinking at 40, even a few glasses of wine left me under the weather for a few days.

TooGood2BeFalse · 29/11/2020 15:57

Do you wear glasses for work that you don't use as much at home?Maybe eye strain if so?

vanillandhoney · 29/11/2020 16:13

It could be all sorts. The first things that come to mind are:

  • how much caffeine you drink.
  • how much water you drink.
  • how much time you spend outdoors.
  • your sleeping pattern may change.
  • do you have the heating on more over the weekends?
  • you you didn't have any alcohol, what did you have to eat/drink that could be different to normal at the weekend?
  • are you getting a decent amount of sleep?
  • eye strain? Do you wear glasses for work that you don't wear at the weekend? An eye test might be a good idea if you're getting headaches.

Do you spend the weekend in a different location to where you are during the week ? Could it be carbon monoxide poisoning ?

33goingon64 · 29/11/2020 16:50

I regularly get headaches and/or super sensitivity to noise at weekends. Often starts Fri night but has just started this afternoon this time. Not so bad I can't look at phone but don't want any noise. I am hardly working atm (paid work) and DC are at school so I don't have a stressful week. Caffeine levels same 7 days a week. Don't drink enough water hut I don't feel thirsty. Heating not been on since this morning. Paracetamol not working. DH is cooking roast dinner and at this rate I won't be able to enjoy it.

katy1213 · 29/11/2020 16:56

I used to get this and it was caffeine withdrawal. I'd have a Saturday lie-in until midday or later which meant I'd missed multiple mugs of builders' tea.

SadSecretSanta · 29/11/2020 19:37

I had the caffeine withdrawal. I felt like I was dying every weekend! I had to make a conscious effort to drink some coffee at the weekend. Now I’ve given coffee up altogether, and I hardly drink any tea.
