I NEVER say the right DC's name

Tell me I'm not alone!

We used to laugh/roll our eyes at my mum as there was four of us and she would sometimes only get our names right on the 4th go - 5th sometimes as she would often include the dog 🤣 but now I'm the exact same and it's so frustrating!

I have two DDs, let's call them Charlotte and Nancy, and a Dog (let's call her Het). It happens especially if I'm telling them not to do something - but almost always goes something like this

If trying to shout for DD1s attention :

Nan - Je - CHARLOTTE!

If trying to get attention ofDD2 :

Char - NANCY!

Shouting at the dog :

Char - Nan - JET!

Even my husband gets called DDs names sometimes 🙈

It makes me so MAD but it's getting worse!

Me too, OP, I am always calling my DC by each other's names. When I was growing up my dad regularly called me and my 2 DBs by the wrong names....Grin you aren't alone!

TheVanguardSix · 29/11/2020 07:29

It gets worse with age!

I'm now mixing in uncles' names, dead relatives... you name it, the dog/cats/kids/husband are called it, as well as each other's names.
It's just all chaos inside my aging brain!

SnuggyBuggy · 29/11/2020 07:30

Sounds like my MIL. DH and BIL names are interchangeable and I get confused between SIL and a cousin. Grin

I have 4DC and at one point 5 dogs, that was confusing, youngest DD was constantly called a dogs name.
Oddly, I have a dog called Het 🤔

MawkishHawk · 29/11/2020 07:34

I only have a DP and dog and get them mixed up.

TheBitchOfTheVicar · 29/11/2020 07:35

Apparently it is something about these names occupying the same area in your brain because they have the same associations ie they are loved ones

vampirethriller · 29/11/2020 07:35

I have one child and one dog and they get each other's name or a mixture. Both have got "old lady names" which doesn't help.

yeOldeTrout · 29/11/2020 07:37

DC have been known to mix up me & DH so I feel no guilt on flubbing DC names.

Sometimesonly · 29/11/2020 07:38

Me too! My MIL used to always call my husband by his brother's name and vice versa- and I'd think "how hard can it be?" Turns out, very hard! I get my three mixed up a lot. I also message my brother instead of my oldest ds - not sure what that's about!

Roselilly36 · 29/11/2020 07:56

I totally get it, I am just the same, I am always calling my eldest DS my husbands name.

DodgeRainClouds · 29/11/2020 08:01

I do it with my kids too. If I see my brother I then spend the next week calling my son his name.

NeonIcedcoffee · 29/11/2020 08:08

I understand why you find this frustrating op I hate searching for a word! I don't have children and don't do this with family or dh and dcat. So wonder if it's a mum thing? Maybe because there's so much going on in there!

mynameiscalypso · 29/11/2020 08:11

I often call my DS my brother's name when I'm cross with him. I think I got so used to being annoyed by my brother as a child that it's a habit now!

MawkishHawk · 29/11/2020 08:11

That makes sense, I did wonder why I didn’t add the cats’ names in the mix. The cats aren’t in the same brain space as doggo and DP. Sorry cats!
rslsys · 29/11/2020 08:13

Wait until you add grandchildren into the equation. Not only more names in the mix but the added problem of who belongs to who!

FTEngineerM · 29/11/2020 08:13

I also used to make fun of grandparents/parents for this but already (DC is only 5m) I call him the dogs name, call the dog DCs name, call the dog my old dog who’s dead’s name.

inappropriateraspberry · 29/11/2020 08:32

Yep! Go through the cat's names as well. My daughter gets off lightly as she's the only other female, but husband, son and cats all get muddled.
I think when you've spent the day saying mostly one name, it kind of sticks for a while!

Lsquiggles · 29/11/2020 08:43

This made me smile, my mom does this so often Grin

Juanbablo · 29/11/2020 08:44

I end up going "ummm, ummmm, what's your name?" 😂

OhToBeASeahorse · 29/11/2020 08:49

I'm a teacher, and I once got a parental complaint because I called their child the wrong name on a school trip. I didnt teach the child and there were 149 kids on this trip.

When the head received the complaint he said 'fuck, I rarely get my own two's names the right way round'.

yeOldeTrout · 29/11/2020 09:40

DC went to same primary school. Younger DC often got called by each other's names by teachers who had taught the older ones. Never bothered me or DC. The whole class would howl the correct name back at one teacher who did this to DC4.

Sometimesonly · 29/11/2020 09:47

As a side note, this is also why it annoys me when people day "it costs nothing to use the right pronouns and if you don't you should be cancelled bla bla". I have over a hundred students and I am sorry, but I cannot guarantee I will remember.

TheChineseChicken · 29/11/2020 09:51

My daughter, niece and I all have names that are quite similar starting with the same letter. FIL cannot cope with this at all

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 29/11/2020 09:52

I do this too.
My Cub pack find it especially amusing... I get all their names right, except my own daughters.

autumnboys · 29/11/2020 09:55

Yes, my mum did this to me & my sister & I do it to my three boys. Even when I’m looking directly at them.
