Am I too old at 48 to be sterilised?

I am nearly 49.

For various reasons coil not an option (not least my "challenging" shaped uterus). Not keen on the idea of going back on the pill (been off it for 5/6 years now and feel so much better without it). Wary of other hormonal stuff.

And yes, I know DP could sort it, but for whatever reasons (which I am comfortable with) that is not an option.

I do not want to get pregnant.

I am pretty sure I am still fertile (periods still regular, ovulation bleed each month) though obviously viability of any pregnancy would be questionable.

I potentially have another 5/6 years of sub-fertility. Of having to avoid pregnancy.

So am thinking getting my tubes tied. To be honest if someone could just take the whole bloody uterus away, that would be marvellous

Would I be laughed out of the GP surgery for being too old?

Anyone a similar age and had their tubes tied?

I asked the gp if I could be sterilised 5 years ago when I was 45. He laughed and said no way would they consider that.

Go private and get it done. That's what I did, best decision I ever made.

Female sterilisation is such an invasive and expensive proceedure, the NHS basically never do it.

If hormonal contraception and the coil won't work for you, then your practical options are condoms, vasectomy for DP or (if you enjoy a degree of risk with your reproductibe choices) Vatican Roulette, AKA natural family planning.

Can I ask how much it cost? We have BUPA through DH's work but when I called up about coil fitting that wasn't covered - so I would guess sterilisation wouldn't be either.

I got it done when I was 27, I'm 47 now, and we had/have private insurance through my husband's work. I know we had to pay a portion, and I think it was around £1,500. Very easy procedure, home a few hours later.

Is that age? As im currently on the waiting list for it at 29 nhs.

@Meowmeow2020 can i ask, where are you and is it purely for contraceptive reasons? Do you already have children? IME it's very rarely done fpr childless women under 35 unless there's a medical reason.

Meowmeow2020 · 29/11/2020 00:22

Edinburgh and 3 kids. Yes purely contraception. I had a phone call that lasted 30 mins or so then i was added to the surgery waiting list.
