Oh I forgot sing and play an instrument. My dh sings and plays guitar beautifully and it makes me swoon Grin

He’s just learnt the new nothing but thieves song “impossible” and it made me go weak at the knees.

runninguphills · 28/11/2020 19:27

I can whistle my dog back, play chess, change the car tyre and do general DIY. I also have ran a few half marathons. However, I think nothing of these things - my list of bring impressed are....

Sing beautifully
Speak other languages
Speak authoritively and articulately at complex work meetings (I have raging imposter syndrome most days!)

BlackPetunia · 28/11/2020 19:30

i wish i could sing!

i can dance...ballroom

I can play chess , whistle the dog back and change a car tyre . I’ve also taken an engine out and rewired the lighting loom on an elderly car under supervision ( I did all the work )

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 28/11/2020 19:39

Weirdly, although I've never milked a cow I feel like I'd be fucking ace at it. Impostor syndrome in my actual job, but milking a cow? Yeah, I'd be the best.

BlackPetunia · 28/11/2020 20:03

haha @JesusInTheCabbageVan oddly i feel i'd nail it too!

so many accomplished MNers here

I can say the long Welsh place name accurately - according to a Welsh-as-a-first-language colleague. I can also mimic accents pretty well.

hard stare

I’ll challenge you.

tinkywinkyshandbag · 28/11/2020 21:10

I can change a wheel but not if the nuts have been put on by a machine.

I can bake sourdough and make my own clothes.

I can use a drill, am quite good at cutting in, and am good at building flat pack furniture.

I can't make pastry, or decent scones however.

mineofuselessinformation · 28/11/2020 22:18

For anyone struggling to get car wheel nuts loose, try to get the spanner horizontal, stand on it and bounce. It might be enough to get it off. If it doesn't, then you need to get help!

Bananalanacake · 28/11/2020 22:20

I used to run a chess team at work, though I haven't played for years. Today my dp told me he's booked a time for me to go to the car dealer and have my winter tyres put on my car.
Thanks to various "most disgusting thing your pet has done" threads on here I will never own a dog.

firedragon101 · 28/11/2020 22:23

I know how to change a tyre (where to put the jack etc) problem is I'm not strong enough to undo the boltsBlush)
Yes can play chess. And yes can whistle for the hound she has selective hearing though so whistling with out crinkling the treat packet is pointless!

I'd love to enjoy sport and not find it a chore, I'd also love to be tidy!

BackforGood · 28/11/2020 22:26

Yes
No
Yes

I wish I could speak Welsh
I wish I could effortlessly bring luscious meals together
I wish I could play the piano

missmouse101 · 28/11/2020 22:26

You mean change a wheel surely, not a tyre? I can do that and whistle but never played chess in my life! I can play cards though!

Cheeseycheeseycheesecheese · 28/11/2020 22:27

I can't do all 3 and certainly not at the same time haha.

My 3 are:
Make brownies (apparently the easiest thing to bake, I disagree)
Iron a shirt
Juggle

LunaNorth · 28/11/2020 22:30

Never tried changing a car tyre, used to be able to whistle until I had my teeth fixed and my dogs have shit recall, and I know the basics of chess but that’s all.

I’m impressed by people who are fluent in more than one language, can play an instrument to a decent standard and don’t procrastinate.

BlackPetunia · 28/11/2020 22:30

no theres definitely an art to brownies. and flapjacks...i never get those right either!

do i mean a wheel then? maybe i do

grassisjeweled · 28/11/2020 23:30

Speak French
Use excel functions
Ski a double black

grassisjeweled · 28/11/2020 23:32

I can't do any of OP's 3 things, BTW

Smallsteps88 · 28/11/2020 23:36

No, no (can do normal whistle but not loud finger whistle) and probably but I’ve never done it.

I’m impressed by people who can try new things on a menu, brave folk.

People who can do wash dry fold and put away all in the same day.

People who just go off and travel to far flung places. Terrifying Grin

SoMuchToBits · 28/11/2020 23:36

I can technically play chess (in that I know the rules etc) but am rubbish at it. The other two, no, but since I neither own a dog or a car, that's ok by me!

But I can play an instrument and make some of my own clothes and cook quite well. So not entirely useless! Smile

Jasmin82 · 28/11/2020 23:38

My Dad taught me how to play chess and, when I was learning to drive, to change a tyre. Unfortunately, I physically can't change a tyre anymore, but I know how it's done so could instruct someone else how to do it at a push (but in reality, I'd just phone the breakdown company to do it).
I can whistle a dog back, though we never trained Resident Collie to respond to a whistle, she just does.
I'm impressed by anyone who can play the piano without swearing 2 bars in, anyone who can decorate or anyone who can knit.

middleager · 28/11/2020 23:47

I can play chess. Watching the Queen's Gambit has encouraged me to download a chess app. It's proving to be therapeutic, although I was much sharper in my youth.

I wish I could:
Play an instrument
Open jars
Fold a paper aeroplane

TheVanguardSix · 29/11/2020 00:46

I'm a lousy (or maybe just rusty) chess player.
I can't whistle a dog back.
I can change a bicycle tyre (and really quickly too! Grin). Does that count?

I'm pretty rubbish at lots of things but I am proud of the fact that I can speak 4 languages, play the violin (not as good as when I was in an orchestra years ago, but still... it's there), and I was a thoroughly decent snowboarder for years (still proud of this because I have such a fear of heights which I seem to lose in the mountains).

PenguinsOnParade · 29/11/2020 01:39

I can play chess although it's been a while, played DH recently for the first time and he thrashed me so I need to practice again.

I don't drive so never learned to change a tyre but that sort of thing is something I would have learned if I could drive. Can't whistle for shit no matter how much I try.

I shouldn't even be allowed near anything DIY or any electrics, I once tried to hang a picture and nearly electrocuted myself. I own a drill, I ask other people to use my drill for me.

However I CAN make a mean soufflé, make my own pasta, make egg custard from scratch, make a great Yorkshire pudding, make amazing batter from just flour and water, very few without a recipe, but I very rarely get good scones when I bake no matter which recipe I follow. Cheese scones are my only exception so they're the only ones I do now.

I'm also crafty, basically anything other than painting or drawing I can do well. So of course I would love to paint or draw well.

And despite my memory for various cooking things I can't teach anyone else. I can't even write down a recipe to share as I wing things and sometimes you just need an extra dash of this or that to make it right, and some things you don't weigh or measure, you just know when it's right and it would ruin it to try and measure it first.
