Rose tinted glasses for child (migraine)

Can anyone tell me if there is anywhere in the UK that you can buy FL-41 (rose tinted) glasses in a size that would fit a child?

DS11 has a genetic condition associated with migraine and he's really struggling with fluorescent school lighting triggering severe migraines, particularly on dark miserable winter days.

I've read research that found FL-20 the most effective tint for light sensitive migraine and it seems like a simple thing to try, but I can't find a pair of kids sized glasses online in the UK? Or do they need a prescription?

Found some in the US but at $100+ it's a bit of an expensive experiment given that different migraine sufferers respond to different coloured tints. If the sizing is wrong it'll be a pain to return them and so on.

Any tips or migraine glasses experiences welcomed! I should probably speak to his neurologist about it but not easy to get hold of him in Covid times, and it seems a fairly low-risk harmless thing to try?

I'm sensitive to fluorescent lighting and can see them flickering, one of the most helpful things is to wear a visor (like a baseball cap) to block them so they arent in my direct line of sight. Will the school let him do that until you can get him the glasses?

RoseTintedBlue · 28/11/2020 13:17

That's actually a really sensible idea, and I'm sure the school would let him as they are very supportive and proactive. They've got him sat next to a window so that he gets as much natural light as possible which has helped a bit too.

Thank you!!

That's also made me wonder whether glasses would help as much as I'm hoping, if the light is overhead. Screens are an issue too so still think the glasses are worth a try, but I'm thrilled with your visor idea and kicking myself for not thinking of it!

You can get blue light blocking (which is what the fl-41 does) glasses on eBay for about £14. I just put in ‘migraine glasses’. Might be worth a go.

Moondust001 · 28/11/2020 13:30

I don't know the answer, but I might know where to ask the question. Try the national dyslexia charities. Many dyslexics are helped by tinted glasses, and rose shades are one of the tints used. It's also worth speaking to migraine charities, as there might be help to buy such things if you can't afford them.

My dd is 11 and wears regular glasses at this point she wears adult size glasses(some of the adult ones don't fit though, the optician helps us find the ones that do and the frames can be adjusted a bit) so you might be lucky and adult ones might fit.

It is temping to give a cheap pair a whirl but then might end up being false economy if we then end up buying the other ones anyway. That said I suppose for the sake of £14 we haven't much to lose...

Funnily enough @Moondust001 I was just on the migraine society website and was thinking it might be an idea to get in touch with them for advice! Very good point re dyslexia too... thank you!

Good point. DS has a large head too! Grin

Have you tried rose to other overlays for school books etc?

NaturalBigDarkBrows · 28/11/2020 13:40

Rose tinted*

RoseTintedBlue · 28/11/2020 13:44

No, haven't tried any overlays for books as it's not reading that's the issue really, more strip lighting affecting him when he's looking to the front of the class at his teacher and the whiteboard etc.

I'm wondering now if you can get rose tinted screen covers though...

OP posts:
RoseTintedBlue · 28/11/2020 13:47

Oooh you can buy tinted screen covers! Maybe that's an inexpensive way to test whether the rose tint actually helps.

I'm dyslexic and have rose tinted glasses from the Irelen's centre. They are custom made to my requirements abs stop my migraines. I also have a rose overlay and a free screen tinter called tinter lite on my computer. I don't know if any of this will help

RoseTintedBlue · 28/11/2020 14:00

Is that a type of software @crazycatlady7? Sounds interesting and worth further investigation!

I've just ordered a pink screen overlay for his PS4 screen to try.

Have you spoken to the opticians it wasn’t for migraines but for a different eye condition but headaches were a symptom but I needed green tinted glasses for school and was able to get them on the NHS from
the opticians. Also I know this is unrelated to your question but have your looked in to the Daith ear piercing I suffered massively with migraines getting at least 2 a month until I had the piercing and in 2 years have only had a hand full and they were all in second month of pregnancy so nothing would have prevented those x

RoseTintedBlue · 28/11/2020 14:11

Tried to ring the opticians just before I posted but couldn't get through, have left them a message! Be much easier to go and get a comfortable pair of glasses fitted in person.

I have a few friends who swear by their daith piercings; probably not an ethical option for an 11 year old though 😬

You can get packs of different coloured cellophane for around a fiver;

Athinginitself · 28/11/2020 14:25

I've got chronic migraine. I bought the super expensive US glasses (there was also an import tax just as a warning!)they do help, to be honest the only thing that really helps is not being around any strip or overhead lights, it's a nightmare at work so I only work in a specific room as much as possible with natural light and a standard lamp.

crazycatlady7 · 28/11/2020 17:16

Yes @RoseTintedBlue screen tinter lite is a free software. Just google it and download it

QueenofLouisiana · 28/11/2020 17:54

DS wears tinted lenses for visual processing disorder and has been in adult sized glasses from about 12. I think I pay about £180 a pair. Worth every penny (even though I since inwardly every time!) to help him cope with day to day reading.
