We haven’t bought any experience days etc but we’ve bought things people can use at home, Amazon echos, Art, things for the garden.
The kids will be getting more as we’ve hardly spent anything on them.
We’ve bought lots of presents for our pets and other people’s pets.

Us small businesses who are relying on Amazon because we can't trade in person don't, though.
Steezy · 28/11/2020 12:29

It's okay people slamming Amazon but other small business sell through Amazon.

I've become far more environmentally aware this year, so I'm determined to cut down packaging and waste in all areas. I'm not prepared to buy "gifts" just for the sake of it, so many are mostly about the presentation and packaging and I'm sure never get used.

For people I need a "token" for it's either alcohol, that I know will be used or Beebombs which I'm really pleased with.

For people who need a "proper" present. I've asked them what they'd like and bought that.

Currently working on environmentally friendly wrapping, but mostly trying to work on the principle that none is better than recyclable.

I do often do trip out of some description for some people but in determined not to do pointless "stuff" instead.

No experience days, no vouchers as don't know which retailers are going to survive this for people to Be able to spend their money in them!

more practical/do at home gifts - family members have taken up running, baking, learning instruments so it's been a bit easier this year to think of presents as I've bought things which are connected to these new hobbies

I still use Amazon as appreciate small businesses use it and also not on the high street.

Tried to support retailers where I can - buying books from Waterstones rather than Amazon making use of click and collect this lockdown

BlueStarRose · 28/11/2020 12:46

Like @BecomeStronger I’ve become a lot more environmentally aware.

We’ve agreed the adults in the family we will do secret Santa. That way everyone gets one nice thing rather then lots of things which will be in a charity shop by January.

DH and I have agreed not to do presents (we have everything we need) and have agreed we will have a nice weekend away when restrictions are lifted.

Children have been directed away from plastic, anything they have similar.

I’ve also got a couple of friends I buy for and get a token thing for the spouse. We have agreed not to do the token thing.

Buying local and from small businesses who need the support more (and I have free time to do that because there’s nothing else to do!)

Making things where I can because it’s a way to be with someone if I can’t see them in person - I can’t hug my mum but I can knit her a lovely soft warm scarf from beautiful yarn for an alternative tactile connection.

Similarly I can’t listen to music with my dad this year but I can send him the same cd I will be listening to.

BadTattoosAndSmellLikeBooze · 28/11/2020 12:53

Exactly. And they employ lots of people who I wouldn’t wish to lose their jobs. It’s always the same on here though. Whatever.

I bought an experience day for my husbands birthday. The voucher lasts a year and its outdoors so I'm hoping that he will be able to use it next spring/summer. Reputable company and bought direct, so hoping they will honour it.

Otherwise it hasnt changed much except most older relatives are just sending money for the kids as they cant go out and shop for them.

DinosApple · 28/11/2020 13:24

I've bought an experience for the extended family. It's a reading of a ghost story by an actor we would normally go and see in person. He's making a living by doing it online currently and you can book him for a private event via zoom.
Obviously it's not as much fun as going to see him in a medieval manor or a cold barely lit church, but we'll all enjoy it and help keep him afloat.

Kids stuff I've bought online at John Lewis, Amazon and Matalan.

loulouljh · 28/11/2020 13:28

Everything online to avoid the mask misery. Trying to find local suppliers to keep them afloat...Haven't booked the usual tickets for a play etc...

nosswith · 28/11/2020 14:34

Yes as two people whom I would be spending Christmas with in normal times will not be as they cannot travel here given quarantine restrictions.

Toilenstripes · 28/11/2020 14:37

Last year I gave DH a cookery course daylong experience. The year before it was rugby tickets. This year, a cheese making kit. 🙄
