Talk to me about Animal Crossing

What is it exactly? It looks to me a bit like Sims where you build your own island and that's about it? I see that it's in real time which is pretty cool.

Just trying to gauge is my 9 year old ds would have any interest in it. We don't have a switch so would need the full bundle and don't want to waste money if it's not his thing.

I think children will get bored very quickly as it's a long game with no end. You start with your island and have to make tools to progress which can take a while. I have it and !i've it but I'm 51 and p lay a little every day and am in the process of redesigning my island. My dd got it in March so spent hours on it getting all the bits, upgrading as quickly as she should and getting to the stage where she has no quests (as such) left. She then lost interest for a while and only picking it up for special days and such (she's 19).

It depends on what he wants from a game as well.

Ah so it's an ongoing type of thing. Is there a community aspect too? Like you can play with others?

The whole package is going to cost close to £250 and if I'm not convinced he'll enjoy it then it's too much to waste. Maybe I would like it though...it sounds pretty cool

Both me and 8 year old DD love it. I know a lot of adults that play it! Its a nice game to play and teaches them a lot about animals and flowers etc. A lot happens to keep it relevant, tournaments, different seasonal challenges, visitors throughout the week etc. She's never played any switch game as much.

It’s...brilliant. In my forties & utterly obsessed with it. Yes, it has parallels with The Sims, but it’s so much more. You can swim, dive, there’s interaction with your villagers, special characters that visit your island & event days, with theming to seasons/holidays etc. Your villagers also celebrate your birthday.

It’s a nice paced, kind of linear progression, starting from when you arrive on your island, building as you develop skills, diy building, onto customisation of your island via terraforming etc with rewards as you progress. And the characters are mostly cute (there are a couple of odd ones!) and adorable. Even the weird looking dudes (Barold, I’m looking at you!) have their own charm.

I play with my adult kids (with their own devices) and friends, visiting islands, meeting up etc.

I’d say, if this is your first Switch console, spend the extra money on a Switch, not a Switch lite. There can be issues with the thumb joysticks developing ‘drift’ which is easy to temporarily fix with cleaning, or replacing the joysticks for about a tenner (kit on Amazon) I’m lucky having an electronics hobby as it’s fiddly to do. With a Switch lite, if you’re unlucky you could end up with an unusable device.

Animal Crossing is brilliant. Chilled fun.

I've also been looking at this for my daughter who loves the games on roblox where you build houses etc.

Does anyone know of any other good switch games I could get her?

On the community aspect, you can invite friends to your Island via Dodo code, or if there are friends round for a play date via local connection. You cannot just have randoms appear without an invite.

I’m an adult & now have real life friends around the world (via Twitter group) & in game but as 9 year olds aren’t on social media that shouldn’t be likely to happen in your case!

You will need a Nintendo Online subscription (about £17 a year) to play with friends outside your home.

I like it. I play it lots. My kids are 5 and 7. They have got a bit bored with it to be honest. I think it relies on being able to play it online with others, so you can go to other people's islands, swap and collect things thay aren't on your own etc. Because of their ages, I don't let my kids play online. So they probably don't get the full enjoyment out of it.

The Nintendo switch is a great console and my kids do really enjoy theirs.

I’m an Animal Crossing purist 😂 but my daughter & mates like the Mario games, Zelda - lots of new Switch reinventions of games of their youth.

My dd 14 loves it, she plays it daily with her Nan, aunt and uncle Grin
