What can I do? Waking up every morning aching

I'm in my 30s, surely I shouldn't be this achey in the mornings!

Every morning without fail I wake up with stiff, achey shoulders and neck. I usually sleep on my side with a memory foam pillow (tempur) and mattress. The pillow/mattress are good quality so where am I going wrong? It's only a small thing but it's getting me down as I'm just not getting good quality rest.

Has anyone had similar? Has anything helped?

Do you take vitamin D?

Notthecarwashagain · 27/11/2020 22:28

Do you clench your jaw?
I wake up the same and I'm pretty sure it's from being tense and grinding my teeth in my sleep.

Notthecarwashagain · 27/11/2020 22:28

(sorry, that was v unhelpful!)

Pepperwand · 27/11/2020 22:33

@Kakiweewee I don't take vitamin d, do you think that would help?

@Notthecarwashagain I don't think I clench my jaw but I have wondered if I'm tense in my sleep. It probably started happening around May time and it's been a tough year but I think I'd notice if I was really tense.

Have a bath before bed? Completely un-medical answer sorry... might help!

Kakiweewee · 27/11/2020 22:37

I think in the UK it's recommended over autumn and winter. I was found to be deficient in March and it made a huge difference to my aches and pains. I've had fibro and arthritis for years so the fact that I'm in significantly less pain is amazing, and I try to share the need for vitamin D supplements with people.

RaeburnPlace · 27/11/2020 23:00

Are you working at home? Laptop/PC?
I'm in agony. I've taken to regular exercise through the day and setting up my laptop to eye level with a separate keyboard.

RosieLemonade · 28/11/2020 06:10

Are you cold in bed? I find I ache If I’ve held myself a certain way because I’m cold.

AlizarinRed · 28/11/2020 06:24

I have found many of my aches and pains have gone since I took up yoga twice a week. Not heavy duty twisting myself into knots more gentle exercises using muscles and joints that you don't usually stretch.
I think with any exercise you need to do it every day preferably twice a week minimum to get a benefit, once is not enough. There's lots online.
I like this one it's only 15 mins, you can sit in a chair rather than the floor.

What dose of vitamin D do you take?
I’ve googled what we should take and can’t seem to find a constant response*

TammyTwoSawnson · 28/11/2020 06:32

I second the vitamin D thing. I used to ache so much but I was very deficient in vitamin D. After 6 months of a fairly high dose, I had no more aches! I take it every day without fail now.

loutypips · 28/11/2020 06:36

I ached terribly after a week on a memory foam mattress! I thought they were supposed to be wonderful but I just didn't get on with it. It felt comfortable while I was in it, but every morning getting up I was in agony.

NoPinkPlease · 28/11/2020 06:36

Pilates - I was waking up like you, now I'm a new woman. Only took a few weeks of a couple of sessions a week.

NoNarniaBecauseLipstick · 28/11/2020 06:40

@Kakiweewee

Do you take vitamin D?
My first thought, too! Vitamin D has transformed me.

I take 2200 IU every day. Feel much better.

Freakout11 · 28/11/2020 06:40

I can’t believe no one has suggested your mattress!

I changed my old bit great one for a superb one and goodness - my sleeping changes over night for the better. No more aches in the opening!

Snowdrop30 · 28/11/2020 06:40

Are you sleeping on your stomach? That does it for me

Todayissunny · 28/11/2020 06:43

Another vote here for vitamin D. And exercise... the pharmacy told me what dose to take.

Pepperwand · 28/11/2020 07:41

Thanks all, I am working from home...only for about 12 hrs a week but from a laptop at the dining table.

Very strangely I've just switched on BBC news and they're talking about taking vitamin d supplements.... I'm definitely going to get some and try some yoga.

Vit D3 with Vit K2. Worth taking a higher dose one to start with (and as it's winter) e.g. 3000 -4000 iu. Also a good quality magnesium supplement can be a game changer. I take dissolvable Magnesium Citrate daily (Viridian). It's made a huge and almost immediate difference - body/muscles feel more relaxed and I sleep much better. Hope you start feeling better 🌷

Mrsdoubtfireswig · 28/11/2020 07:47

Vitamin D! I had it for months and thought I had nerve damage in the end as tried everything but it was just vit d deficiency. Get a blood test though if can rather than supplements to check levels as docs can prescribe high early dose (it took about 4 weeks for pain to start easing for me even on that) then go on to a maintenance dose

Also vit d otc is different to prescribed - so I have to stay on prescribed vit d
