At the age of 21 earning around 12/13 hundred a month, lives with you, has nothing to pay out, apart from own indulgences

200 - 250 a month, own food, own washing etc

jessstan1 · 27/11/2020 22:56

@Aquamarine1029

200 a month, they also buy any special food they want, they do their part with housework and do their own laundry.
That sounds quite fair.

An alternative would be that they chip in for bills and food, proportionately.

I get £50 a week and I use it for groceries so that pays DSs half. He will buy his lunchtime food at work or lunchtime takeaways at home for us. Apparently lots of his friends pay nothing. My DF refused money for the short time I was at home so I used to buy him presents or special food.

RigaBalsam · 28/11/2020 08:32

Nothing unless I really struggled to afford bills.

AlwaysLatte · 28/11/2020 08:34

I wouldn't charge (never did with adult SC in the past) so that they can save to help them on the property ladder.

RosieGirl27 · 28/11/2020 08:41

£200 seems fair on that wage. It teaches responsibility and budgeting IMO.

Loopylou6 · 28/11/2020 09:16

@warriorsmain

Are they buying their own food and cooking for themselves?
No, we buy the food, he cooks it

I'm currently asking 100 pounds per month from him, he's not saving for anything, and to be honest, he does waste his money, I'm skint at the moment, so do really need it

If you are hard up right now, tell him so and ask for another £50. That's reasonable enough.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 29/11/2020 19:06

I misread the title of the thread as "how much would you CHANGE your adult child" and thought "Jesus, that's awful...I wonder if my mum would want to change me?"

isitsnowingyet · 29/11/2020 19:13

£100/month - I'm not desperate for the money, but think it's good for them to pay their way, at least a bit.

raspberryk · 29/11/2020 19:27

Early 2000’s I paid 20% of my take home pay.

cactusisblooming · 29/11/2020 19:44

I'm all for letting them live for free to help them get on the property ladder, but as you are skint OP and he isn't saving anything anyway, then I would say £300 is more than fair, especially as you are buying his food.

Tenyearsgone · 29/11/2020 19:45

Nothing

ScrapThatThen · 29/11/2020 21:06

He needs incentivising to move out. I would inform him that he needs to move towards paying his way in the household now he is an adult (make sure he knows how much council tax, bills and food are monthly) and that his rent will be £200 from Jan, then £250 from March, then £300 from June.

copperoliver · 29/11/2020 22:52

Depends if I needed it or not maximum of £200. X

Dee03 · 29/11/2020 23:01

Both my young adult sons pay £50 a week each....and they buy any extra food/drinks they specifically want
