Insomnia and menopause- any tips?

katebushy · 27/11/2020 09:13

Another sleepless night and at my wits' end.

Already on HRT which had helped the night sweats but I still can't sleep. Taken all the advice about cool room, bath, milky sodding drink, no screen time, you name it, no difference. I already sleep alone. Am not stressed especially. Lots of exercise. Tried nytol but they make me feel even worse than no sleep.

Anyone got any useful suggestions?

Nope but I’m with you.
Another crap night last night, I have been up since 4.45.
Feel so rough with it.
Flowers and sympathy

lighlypoached · 27/11/2020 09:19

Sympathies. Am also suffering. Tried white noise (On a loop in you tube) , which was successful for one night.

Also Pzizz app can help but you need to do it religiously every night and use it when you wake in the night.

And not drinking wine. Bah.

katebushy · 27/11/2020 09:22

Thanks looking at pzizz now

Magnesium supplements are often recommended in these circumstances. I've been taking them for about 6 weeks now and am sleeping better- better periods of deep sleep and getting back to sleep more quickly when I wake up in the night. I've seen enough improvement to carry on taking them.

oneglassandpuzzled · 27/11/2020 09:31

HRT helped me quite a lot. It's not foolproof, but I sleep better than I did.

katebushy · 27/11/2020 09:39

Also, for those with same problem, how do you get through the day without worrying about crashing the car, making serious mistakes at work and sounding completely batshit incoherent?

Try kalms I take 2 at night if I'm struggling sleep right through. My mum also takes kalms night but they make me groggy in the morning

theresagiantonthebeach · 27/11/2020 09:43

second magnesium. .I really notice a difference if I forget to take it

Labobo · 27/11/2020 09:47

I find giving in to it really helps. I get up. Make tea (even though that's a stimulant. I read or tidy up or do admin - online banking, ordering Christmas presents etc. After about 90 mins I start to feel genuinely tired. It doesn't always work but at least I've been productive so if I need a nap in the day I don't feel guilty.

But I feel for you. Some weeks nothing shifts it. Terrible last week. Went to bed at 10pm but wide awake by 12.30 until 4am every night. Felt like the walking dead. I almost cried with relief when I suddenly slept 10 hours at the weekend.

AnyFucker · 27/11/2020 09:54

I tried to fight it, I tried to medicate it, I tried to cure it.

Nothing worked. I stopped trying. I accepted that my body did not need as much sleep as I thought it did. I told myself that my body would make me sleep when I really needed it.

Things have slowly improved now I am officially past the menopause.

katebushy · 27/11/2020 10:05

@AnyFucker thanks, what age are you officially over it? I've had a hysterical but still got ovaries, so signs for me less obvious.

I like an Epsom salt bath and a camomile tea. I use Pzizz with varying degrees of success!!

AnyFucker · 27/11/2020 12:08

I was told over 50 and no periods for over a year= official menopause

katebushy · 27/11/2020 16:23

Got some magnesium tablets thanks, £1.50! Bargain!

Another one who recommends magnesium.
Used to wake up loads or be awake for an hour at a time. Now I wake up once and go back to sleep within minutes

sparklepink · 27/11/2020 17:22

I'm not going through menopause yet (hopefully!) so can't comment on that aspect but there's an amazing guy called Michael Sealey on youtube. He has over 1m subscribers because his voice is the most chilled out help you sleep zone out voice ever. Usually I put it on and within 5 mins I am completely zonked out. He does hypnosis ones and just help to sleep ones. Really highly recommended!! Read the comments below the videos, it will help you to see how other people have found the videos.

LittleTreasure · 27/11/2020 18:23

Epsom salts- are also magnesium

VallarMorghulis · 27/11/2020 19:32

I haven't read all the replies so apologies if that's been said already. I had the same problem, it's shit isn't it?

What's helped me is doing some restorative yoga before bed, just 10 minutes most of the time, 20-30 minutes if I've got the time and the energy. I use an app called Down Dog.

Good luck op, I hope you get a good night's sleep soon.

VallarMorghulis · 27/11/2020 19:34

Sleep stories help as well, there's loads on YouTube.

Othering · 27/11/2020 19:38

My insomnia is horrendous at the minute. All linked to the menopause. Anxiety attacks, racing thoughts, waking at 4am etc etc. I always recommend the guy who owns Victoria Health. He's really knowledgeable about the menopause and suggests some excellent supplements. I took Sage Complex for a long time, as recommended by him and it really did work. Let me dig out the video. Stand by.....

A big dose of night nurse

That was when I gave up and went for HRT. I couldn’t risk losing my career.
alldone1972 · 28/11/2020 17:17

Magnesium lotion.
I've got the sleep one.
I've had twitchy legs for a couple of years and put on legs and the back of my neck.
I've been sleeping like a baby since I've been using it.
