How imaginative is your 3 year old

DS is always doing imaginary play. He's constantly playing out some really random scenario.

Today he was looking for tiny chickens that had escaped from his coop. We then had to find worms to feed them.

Just wondered if this was a high level of imagination or pretty standard.

Thank you

More imaginative than my 3yr old- she doesn’t do the make believe stuff as much yet. She’s far more the physically active type, no focus to create whole scenarios as you describe

I think this is pretty normal for a 3 year old. My oldest, when he was 3, would put on shoes and plays for people and act out things from his imagination and get adults involved too :) my youngest is 3 now and he does lots of very imaginative play with his toys and teddies :)

Mine is very like yours and has been for quite some time. Nursery says it’s their ‘super power’! Not intended as a stealth boast - there are loads of things they don’t do as well!

My eldest has never had much of an imagination, very logically minded - Santa was a no go by 4 because "it didn't work like that".

Youngest is always making up random scenarios and chats away to her invisible friends.

My son is like that, he’s also 3! Makes me want to cry sometimes when I really do not want to pretend I’m walking a fake dog (which somehow I sometimes manage to do wrong in his eyes) Blush

Also he knocks on the living room door pretending he’s delivering parcels which I have to take in.. he usually grabs stuff from the kitchen cupboards to deliver!

My eldest has no imagination... Youngest total opposite... Full of ideas, imaginary friends... Much better storytelling now older

Ds3 doesn't particularly play out scenarios but he does speak to his nursery classmates often - at home.

It's a bit like an imaginary friend type thing except these are real kids whose names I recognise. So he'll be sitting drawing and then just burst out 'Oh Jacob that's so silly' or 'There we are Theo, you can have my pencil for your drawing', or 'Come on hurry up Eva, we need to put our coat on', like a constant running commentary/scene playing out in his head!

Yeah he sounds just like my just turned three year old! He is super super imaginative and it’s his favourite form of play. He’s not quite as good at crafty sort of play - eg. Playdoh, colouring etc. He does enjoy doing them but he’s not as advanced in those areas and he just simply doesn’t get as much enjoyment from it, as he does from imaginative play! He’s probably naturally more imaginative than me, and he’s always bossing me around in his elaborate play scenarios!

Motherofmonsters · 26/11/2020 20:30

That's interesting it seems to be either really imaginative or not very much. He plays with kinetic sand and playdoh but not modeling, just pretending it's something else.
