He complained about my Bubble & Sqeak

So in keeping with watching all the pennies currently I've made DP Bubble & Sqeak for the first time.

I grew up with cooking it till crispy and bordering on almost burning. Turning it all over and repeating again and again until you have lots of glorious crispy bits all the way through

DP said that's wrong and cooked some that was too much to fit in the frying pan and he stirred it around a bit till heated through. It was mushy and basically oily and not nice to me but he said I was doing it wrong.

Was I, how do you cook yours? It's rather knocked me for six I have to confess.

Definitely crispy.

In a sandwich with cheese did you say? Sounds like my new favourite lunch .

Just thinking now - what do you all put in your bubble and squeak? For us it's mainly a Boxing Day thing so always sprouts but also whatever other veg hanging around .

Some of your topping suggestions are awesome but tonight I had mine with some leftover Roast Beef and gravy made from the meat juices.

But I must try the fried egg sometime Smile

Your husband is wrong.

Tenementfunster · 26/11/2020 19:36

I’ve seen people mould it into patties.
Those people are animals.
Yours is spot on. Burned bits All chucked in frying pan Smile

ShinyRuby · 26/11/2020 19:38

Your way is definitely right!
His just sounds like greasy mash & cabbageConfused

boatyardblues · 26/11/2020 19:38

Salad cream is lovely on bubble and squeak.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 26/11/2020 19:40

When I was pregnant with ds1 this was what I craved. I’d make roasts with extra veg just so I could have bubble and squeak with extra crunchy bits. I’m getting heartburn thinking about it now after 33 years.
Your dh is weird. And wrong.

june2007 · 26/11/2020 19:41

TBH I think I would want a cross between both. Not flat and burnt whioch yours sounds or oily like his.

ivykaty44 · 26/11/2020 19:43

Tell your dh he can keep his bubble

Yours is how it’s done

Callybrid · 26/11/2020 19:45

Yes lots of crispy/borderline burnt bits and a fried egg on top, but Worcestershire Sauce, not HP. Bit of black pudding on the side also good.

My dad always did it the morning after eating cauliflower for dinner the night before with the left over potatoes and cauliflower leaves.

agree, I think you’re Both doing it wrong, it should be crispy on the outside, soft on the inside.
Fromage · 26/11/2020 19:49

Your husband has invented hot coleslaw.

A new culinary low.

Iwouldlikesomecake · 26/11/2020 20:16

His sounds revolting. Love a crispy bubble and squeak.

RumJerrySailorRum · 26/11/2020 20:20

You are both wrong.

A combination of both is required.

Figmentofimagination · 26/11/2020 20:28

I like it cooked crispy but not quite burnt. Also have it with a slice of bread to make a bubble & squeak butty.

When I started dating my now DH he had never heard of it before. He loves it now but only drowned in gravy. Because there is sometimes gravy left over I will pour a little bit on mine. Not lots but just a nice amount that I can dip my sandwich into.

WhatKatyDidNxt · 26/11/2020 20:35

Another vote for crispy. His sounds grim Shock

TwentyViginti · 26/11/2020 21:02

Yours OP.

I like mine with fried eggs and piccalilli.

Issitu · 26/11/2020 23:30

Crisply with a fried egg in a sandwich.

Dh is very very wrong! Grin
