Avengers films done- are the x-men films appropriate?

Me and my 2DC ages 7 and 9 have just finished all of the avengers films which they absolutely loved and we had no problems with them watching it.

They have asked to move onto the x-men films however I haven't seen any of those and I am getting conflicting advice online.

They're desperate to see these films as well as venom.

Could someone just advise whether they are appropriate and are on par with the avengers?

The X-men films are quite good, especially the earlier ones. Think they would be ok for 10+ children but you can always check that out watching trailers, reviews etc?
Have they seen Guardians of the Galaxy? It's funny and quite sweet, not too violent and no real swearing, AFAICR.
also Chris Pratt is hot
(The sequel is not as good as the first one, IMO)

To add - i don't think the X Men films have the same humour or lightness of touch as the Avengers, the tone is more serious, but James McEvoy and Michael Fassbinder are both good. As are Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen as their older characters.

Nookable · 26/11/2020 17:51

Possibly ok for the 9 year old depending on the child but I dont think it would be great for a 7 year old.

Their tone is darker than the Avengers as they're essentially about prejudice. Bit of a spoiler but there are scenes set in nazi Germany involving a Jewish child being separated from his mother and later his mother being killed.

The deaths/injuries are more graphic than the Avengers as well. Off the top of my head I can remember someone turning to jelly, someone trying to cut off a part of their body and someone who has bits of skin ripped off.

It's definitely not horror level and those aren't all from one file. I first watched started watching them at 12 I think and was fine but 7 might be pushing it.

What about the Tobey Maguire Spiderman's?

I'd strong recommend the Ant Man movies. A lot of fun for kids that age. I also enjoyed them (and I don't typically like super hero movies)

Red02 · 27/11/2020 13:41

We have done all of the marvel films from the beginning so we have seen guardians of the galaxy and ant man and they loved them.

They are desperate to watch x-men and venom, I'll have to do more research and have a think about it.

They said that they are too old for Disney films now which saddens me and the avengers series really brought us closer together so it would be great if we could start another collection of films to enjoy.

I agree with the above poster, some x men will be ok but Logan, for instance, really isn't suitable for that age.

Have you got the IMDb app? It's a fab app that lists pretty much every film ever made with full cast lists and most importantly for you - a parental advisory section which gives a really in depth description of all risqué parts of the film like how much nudity/bad language or bloody gore.

Plonque · 27/11/2020 14:03

This is the parental advice section for the first x men film

The X men films would be ok, but I wouldn't watch Logan with them. Also I really wouldn't watch venom with them.
The xmen are rated as 12A, so really up to you. Maybe watch one or 2 of them first and see what you think.

pointythings · 27/11/2020 14:14

I'd say the X-men films are a little dark for 7 and 9, even the early ones, but having said that they do make some good points about the nature of bigotry. I wouldn't worry so much about violence as I would about the emotional aspects of the films - they're definitely sadder.

The Wolverine origin stories are really not suited to that age group, and Logan is a 15 for very good reasons. It's a brilliant, brilliant film and I absolutely loved it, but it tackles some really adult themes and includes a searing portrayal of someone with dementia that is hard to watch.

ilovespinach · 27/11/2020 14:36

Have they seen the Star Wars films?

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 27/11/2020 14:43

I think x-men may be too gritty for a 7 year old, the subject matter is darker. But Spiderman, Ant man and Guardians of the Galaxy are great suggestons!

Daria32 · 27/11/2020 15:02

I’ve just watched the first X Men film with my 9 year old- and we both loved it. We did all of the Avengers/ Marvel films first and I was bit worried, but it was fab! Nothing particularly inappropriate or gory

forestsmurf · 27/11/2020 16:37

I would agree in regards to xmen, I think they will be fine if they have watched avengers, avoid Logan and venom isnt suitable in my opinion, much more violence and bad language.

TicTacTwo · 27/11/2020 17:07

Guardians and Antman are Marvel movies so the kids have seen them.

I think that some of the x-men movies are fine and the others not so much.

EmilySpinach · 27/11/2020 17:12

I was going to suggest Star Wars too.

EmilySpinach · 27/11/2020 17:13

Especially Mandalorian if you have Disney+.

romany4 · 27/11/2020 17:14

I took my then 9 year old to see Xmen 3 at the cinema. He totally loved it.

But I think your 7 year old may be a bit young for them

Red02 · 27/11/2020 22:20

Thank you very much for your replies, they haven't seen Star Wars so I'll definitely suggest that.
