Have I killed my shady room trailing ivy?!

It gone all crispy...
I might have killed (the second one) with love, when I over enthusiastically watered it, and left it water logged.....
Then I took it out of water and put it in a brighter place, but still not happy.
Soil is now warm and wet, plant crispy and sad.

It is dead? Ita the second one I've killed now Sad

What’s its Latin name op

The6thQueen · 25/11/2020 18:55

An you repot it in drier soil? Sounds like you’ve drowned the poor thing Grin
You should only water them when the top soil feels properly dry and never stand them in water

The6thQueen · 25/11/2020 18:57

These tips may help if it revives or for lucky plant no 3 😁

Laughing out loud, the top soil was dry and I kept forgetting to water it... so I got over excited and gave it lots of water, it was hanging from a plant hanger so I didnt realise it was awfully water logged for a few days until it started looking sad and I went to investigate.

Poor bugger has had its day hasnt it?...

Its currently sat on a radiator thinking I can dry out the soil Grin

I should just give up!

I’m no gardener, but I don’t think cooking it will help now Grin

Crispy deathus, from the hiccupiscal-region of watery soil plant hell.

Now I feel like I killed a kitten or something.

What the hell was I thinking.

....to PP, Latin is apparently hedera helix.

Deathy-deathus

I have one that is exactly the same OP. Second one I have killed. I don't get it, I water when it's dry only but the crispy death seems to creep along it until it all starts dropping. What are we doing wrong?!

I'm so happy im not the only one. Stupid thing is, I have several other plants I somehow manage to keep alive?! I really hope some plant expert comes along to enlighten us to what we are supposed to do. I have a dangling plant holder, in a shady room, and this seems to be the only type of plant suitable... except I cant keep the bloody things alive!

I'm honestly so glad someone else is giving these plants the same life of doom, I feel slightly better now!

I kill these all the time and bought a plastic one from ikea

NanTheWiser · 25/11/2020 22:51

Ivies really don’t make good indoor plants - too warm and a dry atmosphere which they don’t like. They much prefer cool, damp shady places out of doors.
Maybe try something like Tradescantia or Pothos which would be more suited to indoor culture.

So it’s not you! Just a plant in the wrong place!

Hiccupiscal · 26/11/2020 09:31

Thank you for the suggestions @NanTheWiser, will those kind of plants work in a shady room, in a window with indirect light?

I really want a beautiful trailing plant for my plant hanger. It really brings the toom together, suggestions welcome!

@Hiccupiscal, they should be OK, it’s always trial and error with plants, but give them a go, and see how they do.

nemeton · 26/11/2020 12:30

I've just crisped one of mine too!
It was doing really well in my north facing bedroom where I open the windows every day...but after watering I left it in the kitchen on a sunny shelf... crisped to death.
One stalk is still green, but it looks pretty daft among all the brown crispy ones Grin

I'd kept it alive for 12 months too, which is good for me.

MrsJunglelow · 26/11/2020 13:06

OP, I have loads of houseplants.
There are only two I have so far failed to grow:

  • string of pearls
  • ivy

Ivy, imo is not an indoor plant.
It just isn’t, it needs to be outside.

MrsJunglelow · 26/11/2020 13:07

Also, if you are looking for a trailing plant for a shady room I think you’d struggle to go wrong with Pothos.

MrsJunglelow · 26/11/2020 13:09

Also agree with Tradescantia which has already been mentioned.
Philodendron might do well aswell

juneybean · 26/11/2020 13:13

Oh my god this thread has me laughing! I too have killed my lovely ivy so you're not alone OP. Well it might not be dead but it's definitely crispy!

ThomasHardyPerennial · 26/11/2020 13:32

I have one ivy plant at the moment, which is about 4 years old now. I am amazed that it is still alive, because I have killed 3 others since I got that one Grin! I let the soil dry out completely, and water it (from top and bottom) every few weeks. I keep it up high on a tall bookcase, and ignore it most of the time. It definitely doesn't grow very quickly, but it seems happy enough in my incredibly cold house.

I have never managed to revive one once the crisp sets in.
