Talk to me about very heavy periods

I've always had fairly heavy periods since being a teenager but over the past year (Im now 40!) they've been horrendous. I'm bleeding heavily for 40-50 days at a time with a 2 week break, huge clots, couple of days of seriously heavy bleeding each cycle.
I've had scans which show nothing other than pcos, which I've known about for years.
I'm very anaemic unsurprisingly.
I've started taking the mini pill again about 3 weeks ago but so far that's doing nothing, possibly even making things worse. ( currently been bleeding since 13th Oct).

My GP called today to say my iron levels 3 months ago were 75. Been taking iron tablets for 3 months and my level is now ...74. She's going to refer me to a gynaecologist.

Just wondered if anyone has come out the other side of something similar and what the issue / solution was? Feel really fed up / concerned! Thanks

I’ve heard that COVID can disrupt periods. I think it did mine! Anyhow. I’ve just had a camera for very heavy periods and they found thickened uterine lining and a few polyps which they removed there and then. I’m now waiting for biopsy results. My gynae consultant said to use T.acid for the duration of my period.

Please do get it sorted. I’d never had such heavy periods before this year and was shocked by how disruptive they could be. As someone who is self-employed, they’ve cost me hundreds of pounds in time spent on the loo!!

Oh interesting on the mooncup, I might have a look at those for the time being but it does sound like ablation might be the way forward.
Yes it is so exhausting and disruptive, I've been very lucky that I've been working at home since March, I don't know how I would have coped having to go into an office like this.

I am going through something similar but only bleeding for 10-12 days at a time but very heavy. I have fibroids and waiting on another scan. Possible hysterectomy has been mentioned to me. Good luck.

Very similar story to you OP. Really heavy periods, iron levels in my boots, no fibroids on a scan.
Ended up with a coil (which I was hesitant about as the pill did not agree with me) and it was a game changer. Couple of days of light spotting every month and that’s it.

My story is similar to yours, I ended up with 2 iron transfusions and a surgical ‘resection’- which I think is similar to an ablation. Recovery was a couple of days and I think it took me longer to recover from the GA than the surgery.
I am no longer anaemic, have a couple of days of ‘light spotting’ as a period and have my life back.
My only regret is having the op earlier.
