People with dogs who work all day...

I am just curious what people do if they work all day (with no one at home) and can’t afford a dog walker. I know some people can leave their dog in the garden, but around where I live people either don’t have a garden or the garden is a very small backyard and I don’t think anyone leaves their dog there.

I have a neighbour who works all day and her a small dog. I am pretty sure it doesn’t get walked, during the day, which is probably ok as it’s the kind of toy dog that does not need much exercise BUT where does it do its business!? Can small dogs have litter trays like cats?

(No, I don’t spy on my neighbours, but we i live in such close proximity to a number of neighbours that since March I have got to know a lot more about their habits than I want to!!!)

@Notcontent are you sure she doesn't bring it to work. Live in london and people do that which is why in a way, living in a flat isn't a big problem.

Notcontent · 24/11/2020 23:55

No, I don’t think so, as I often see her coming home. But I know some people do that...

I have a 'cat flap' in the back door. She goes in and out of the house throughout the day whilst I'm at work. We do have an enclosed garden though.

Well clearly, aside from the practical issues people must face when they leave their dogs at home alone all day with no dog walker, it’s just totally cruel to leave a dog alone all day, and people that do this clearly have no conscience. Poor dogs Hmm

vanillandhoney · 25/11/2020 07:02

Some people are just shit owners. I suspect she uses puppy pads or similar for accidents as I doubt a toy breed could hold it for entire working day.

I think what she's doing is cruel, though. If you can't afford a walker or daycare and you work full time, you shouldn't have a dog. They're not right, they're an immense privilege.

Too many people treat their dogs like stuffed toys, though. It's sad and an utterly shit life for the dog imo.

I drop dpup every day at my parents house. I'd never leave her alone it's just not fair. I'd be concerned about disturbing neighbours and theft if left in a garden for a short time but longer term again it's unfair regardless as it's not just toilet they need it's company too.

Before covid, i would leave at 7, dog walker would walk dog at 10-11 then dog would be at home till my partner got home at 3ish.

He just sleeps.

Tbf, even with me wfh he just sleeps on our bed all day 😂

Veterinari · 25/11/2020 08:33

Some dogs will hold on through the day fairly comfortably if walked before and after work. Others won't.
It varies from dog to dog

Pinkyandthebrainz · 25/11/2020 12:03

It's not right and so sad for the dog. Unfortunately we have such shit animal rights laws (looks at the crappy outcomes when cases go to court) and no real 'process' as such, so any old Tom, Dick or Harry can buy a dog. I've known people who have contemplated getting one and I've been brutally honest about the responsibility and what is involved. They look at you blankly as though you're trying to pee on their parade. And now we have Xmas coming up when puppies will be bought and dumped by next Xmas. Just look at how many people bought dogs during first lockdown without thinking about going back to work. Really angers me. So cruel and selfish. Yes there are dogs who manage for longer periods than others if needed and will sleep, potter about till owner returns but it should not be a daily occurrence to be left all day.

I have a friend who comes across to dog sit/walk when im at work. Tbh unless you were watching my house all day you probably wouldnt know! He also has the cat for company ...

VenusClapTrap · 25/11/2020 12:40

I used to have a neighbour who left her Jack Russell all day. He had access to the garden through a dog flap. This was fine apparently till we moved in next door with our mischief maker of a cat, who would flaunt herself on the fence between the gardens and make the dog bark like crazy, so the other neighbours complained. She asked us to make the cat refrain from teasing him. Hmm

ArcherDog · 25/11/2020 13:08

Mine just sleeps.
He doesn’t need the toilet when left, he can go 10+hours without toileting if he’s feeling lazy.

Walk in the morning, frozen stuffed kong for him during the day, walk when I get home.

I use to come back at lunch but he would usually just go straight back to sleep whether I was there or not!

He likes his peace and quiet and routine.

Dog walkers are a relatively new thing. When we got ddog 10 years ago I left at 8and Dh was home at 430. It was normal then.
