What time do your 9 & 7 year olds go to bed?

INeedADayOff · 24/11/2020 22:27

It’s just dawned on me that my 9 & 7 year old go to bed quite early Blush

7pm for the 7 year old with lights out at 7.15 and 7.30 for the 9 year old with 1/2 hour before lights outs. They both read in bed before going to sleep.

Both are really good sleepers so 7 year old will sleep till 6.30/7am and my 9 year old will sleep to 7/7.30am

Is this too early should I be switching it up and making it later?

if there tired and falling to sleep then leave it how it is. My 7 year old just doesn't seem to need much sleep. no matter what time I put him to bed he doesn't fall to asleep till 9 and he wakes naturally between 7-730 in the morning.

badlydrawnbear · 24/11/2020 22:49

Your current timings seem to be working for you. They go to bed early and don't wake up horribly early. Mine are 9 and 6, I got home from work at nearly 10pm and they were both still awake though they were in bed, this isn't unusual. When I am at home they are in bed by 8, but they are terrible sleepers and don't go to sleep until much later.

Is this a stealth boast OP? Grin

My 8 yo goes up anywhere between 7 and 8pm and is asleep by 9pm usually and sleeps until i wake him at 7.30am

INeedADayOff · 24/11/2020 23:00

@BogDiscuits I just felt guilty reading a thread in AIBU Blush

It does seem to work for them, so best not to change things to much at the moment

My 7 year old is in bed anytime between 7-730, normally asleep straight away till 630/7 next morning. He needs a lot of sleep, his younger brother has never needed as much and can go to sleeep at 9, be up at 6 and still be fine all day. He’s been the same since he was a baby and it took me a long time to get used to the fact that he jst didn’t need as much sleep as his older brother.

If yours are falling asleep at that time and not messing for ages then sleeping soundly I’d say it was right for them.Smile

Blankiefan · 24/11/2020 23:15

My 7yo goes to bed at 8. Supposed to be asleep by 8.30 but usually neater 9pm. Gets up around 7am.

If you're go early, I wouldn't mess with it.

Equimum · 24/11/2020 23:19

If it works for you, stick with it. Some children need more sleep than others.

My 7 year old goes to bed at 7.30 and we read to him for about half an hour. Sometimes he goes to sleep after this, and other nights he is awake until 9/9.30. He never been great at settling, but as he sometimes fall asleep, we still put him to bed at that time, so he gets the sleep when he needs it.

Stompythedinosaur · 25/11/2020 00:14

I have a 9yo and 7yo, bedtime is 8.30 on a school night or 9 on a weekend. They wake around 7.

Stompythedinosaur · 25/11/2020 00:15

I should say, we start bedtime an hour before that, those are the "lights off and go to sleep" times.

ClaireP20 · 25/11/2020 00:23

7 year old goes up at 8, plays lego 20mins, story and lights out. Up at 7.30.
11 year goes to bed at 9.30 (ish). X

HuntedForest · 25/11/2020 05:28

My 8 year old goes to bed at 8pm, lights out 830. But has been awfully tired and horrible to wake in the mornings (630, school starts at 720) so I've shifted it back half an hour this week.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 25/11/2020 05:55

My 9&7 both go up at 8pm, then read to about half past. Aybe a bit later at weekends.

PaperMonster · 25/11/2020 06:51

If it works, then it’s not a problem. My nine year old is in bed for nine and falls asleep between 9.30 and 10 then up at 7.30.

Guineapigbridge · 25/11/2020 09:09

9 year old, 8.30 into bed, allowed to read till 9.
8 year old 8.15 into bed, allowed to read till 8.45.

Both up at about 7.15 ish.

ritzbiscuits · 25/11/2020 09:57

My son is just 7, he tends to be in bed by 7.30 and then reads until 8.30-9pm. He's a bit book obsessed at the moment and seems to get enough sleep so I let him get on with it.

lazylump72 · 25/11/2020 10:48

10 pm for my 9 yr old...at the very latest on school days up at 7,15 happily..weekends when she likes but rarely does she stay up past 11 and long lazy lie ins sat/sunday til about 11am..if she is tired she doesnt bat it out she will go get in bed herself. She knows when she is tired and she is sensible.Last friday she was beat after a cold and went to bed at 8! Just do whats right for your own chidren.

SpaceOp · 25/11/2020 10:53

I have two children on complete opposite sides of the sleep spectrum from each other so I have learnt that there really is no one-size-fits-all approach.

As such, my advice is that clearly your children are the types who need plenty of sleep so there is no reason to change anything. You would know if you needed to change things - a child in DS' class was waking earlier and earlier. But it turned out age 8 he was still being put to bed at 7am. They've shifted to 8 or 8:30 and he's back to waking around 7.

[I fully expect DD to be like your children. Age 5 she is still routinely getting a minimum of 11.5 hours a night and I deeply suspect that if I put her to bed half an hour earlier, she could do 12. DS, aged 9, on the other hand, does just fine on 9-9.5 a night.]

SeasonallySnowyPeasant · 25/11/2020 10:53

It sounds like your current timings work for your DC so don't worry about what other people are doing.

My DC are 10 and (just) 8. The 10yo is in bed at 8.30 and allowed to read for 30 mins before lights out at 9. The 8yo is in bed for 7.30, has a story and a song and lights out at 8. This is a new thing (both kids moved to 8pm lights out when they turned 8. Previously, she was in bed for 7 for lights out at 7.30. They're both taking ages to go to sleep at the moment - probably because all their sports are cancelled during lockdown - but this is usually fine.

OnTheBenchOfDoom · 25/11/2020 10:54

I think if they naturally wake in a morning or are easy to get up and out of bed then they have had enough sleep.

I usually volunteer in a primary school and have had 8 year olds tell me they go to bed at 11pm and are shocked when I tell them I go to bed earlier than them, they are also the child yawning their head off and struggling to concentrate. I think bed times are dependent on what time they are up in the morning too. But sleep is very subjective. My eldest has always needed more sleep than my youngest.

My sons are in bed by 9.30pm and are teenagers, they also lie in on a weekend until ooooh about 7.30am! Yes I know it isn't normal but it works for them, in the week they are up at 6.20am for the youngest, straight into the shower and 7am for the eldest, again straight into the shower.

Tfoot75 · 25/11/2020 10:59

No need to feel guilty, if they sleep that long then they need it! My 7yo has lights off at 9 on weekdays and 9.30 at weekends. We would rather it was earlier but she only needs 10 hours of sleep! Average for this age is apparently 10.5 so I don't feel too bad, but I'm aware of other 7yos who still sleep for 12 hours, they are all different.

passthemustard · 25/11/2020 11:04

My 8yo is in bed at 8.30, usually asleep by 9 and I wake her up at 7am. Weekends she only stays up later if something specific is happening otherwise business as usual.

choli · 25/11/2020 11:04

It's Mumsnet. Soon we will see that the average bedtime is 3pm and the child in question is a grumpy monster if there is a 30 second deviation from bedtime

Sober4Summer20 · 26/11/2020 12:58

I have a 7&8 year old. They have lights out at 8.30am but dont usually fall asleep until about half 9. They both wake up at 6.30am. They just dont seem to need much sleep xx
