Campervan hire

Dreaming of a holiday next year!

Been quoted £150 day and wondered what others had paid for campervan hire (appreciate will depend on location and time of year). Also has anyone had any experience of camplify?

Sorry, can’t help you at all with hire prices.
But we have a motorhome, on our third one now, the freedom is like no other holiday, even caravanning or camping.
By camplify do you mean camp life? Typing error? If so what is it you want to know?

Is that UK? We paid around 100-120 euros per day for campervan hire in Iceland (October and July - very simple, 2 person van. 2nd time we had heating which put the price up) and 80 euros per day Slovenia for something bigger (VW transporter) in mid-season late August/early Sept.

We have our own now (VW T5) and love it so much.

I think camplify is like an Airbnb for campervan? But probably not too popular yet given the pandemic.

You're all making me want to buy a camper! Would love one.

We found the price was around £100 per day when we looked into it about ten years ago (although there'd probably have been more for insurance on top of that). So when we realised that we could pay £100 per night for a nice hotel/ b&b/ clamping site to travel around Scotland, plus have our car to go exploring without having to pack up a campervan each time, we gave up on the idea.

Still like it as an idea though - we love camping. Just can't justify the cost.

I haven’t heard of one of those, you learn something new every day Smile
Ours is a big one with its own bathroom with shower cubicle, central heating, fully equipped kitchen with cooker, microwave, tall fridge freezer, solar panel on the roof etc, our holiday home on wheels. Means we can be self sufficient & can take the dogs.

Agradecida - same that's why we've never done it before. Just got a hankering for a road trip and don't fancy pitching a tent each night. But it's looking cheaper to book a BnB each night.

Love the idea though!

With Covid, I think camper vans are going to be hugely popular since you’re basically bringing your home environment and a reasonable amount of home comforts with you.

BUT hiring is ridiculously expensive. On top of your £150 a day you’ll need to add fuel, campsite fees, electricity consumption at the site, public transport or bicycles if you want to sightsee etc. etc.
And the person doing the driving has a lot of responsibility if they’re not used to handling large vehicles. Not DH’s idea of a holiday.
After only a short investigation we realized we could get a 3 star hotel for four at the same price and not be living on top of each other (with a portaloo and limited cooking or washing facilities).

People I know who own one are resigned to it being a huge expense (insurance, maintenance, depreciation and storage in some cases) and the most successful are retired, avid members of the Caravan Club or share the cost with extended family.

But renting? No.

georgedawes · 24/11/2020 20:55

Yes sgtmajor completely agree with all you've said. Our neighbour has a lovely van but it did cost ££££ to buy! And is a lifestyle really. Rental seems v expense when you add the extras on but does look fun.

We hired one 6 years ago, it cost £500 for 4 nights. We can home and bought one immediately.
We budget £500 a week for a camper an holiday, site fees and having fun. We have young children and I wouldn’t want to stay in a hotel with them.

I'm a little late to this conversation, but thought i'd mention in case its of interest for anyone's staycation this year! My daughter hires her campervan in Yorkshire - its a not as expensive as those mentioned above and its a very pretty little van! There's also sites like camperbug to help find a range of other for classic and more modern campers.

Hired from these guys for a reasonable price! We took the campervan to Europe and had the best holiday - we had never been in a campervan before but honestly feel like we will be doing campervan holidays every year.
