Professional Ebay sellers using private selling accounts

I'm getting fed up of seeing blatantly professional Ebay sellers using private accounts, which means they can refuse to accept returns.

Private accounts are for people just selling their unwanted stuff lying around the house.

If you have 3,000 brand new items, you're a business.
If you buy stuff to resell, you're a business.

By law, businesses have to accept returns for most items when selling online. People are taking the piss.

If its any consolation it maddens professional eBay sellers too.

Hoping that when the new managed payments system gets rolled out to private ebay accounts next year it will help to go a little way in preventing this as all income from sales will be paid directly into a single bank account that must be in the sellers name.

I'm dreading the managed payments coming up. From reading the Ebay messageboards, it sounds like a nightmare.

Just as long as they don't expect private sellers to suddenly start accepting returns. They just need to crack down on people misusing their accounts.

Can you explain about managed payments please? Xx

I've been on managed payments for a while and had no issues so far. The main thing is that you have to dispatch a sold item before you actually receive the money for them so its good to have a little buffer with money put aside to help cover the cost of postage for the first few weeks.

When a buyer pays for an item the payment is processed by ebay and held by them for a couple of days before it is transferred to your registered bank account. As soon as ebay receive the payment they will tell you to dispatch the item. Buyers can pay by numerous methods including Paypal but it goes in eBays own Paypal account. You can select how often you wish to receive a pay out after their handling time has cleared ie daily or weekly. Ebay deduct their fees from this money ie listing fees, final value fees. There is also an additional payment processing fee similar to that of that of a Paypal transaction fee that is also incurred. Ebay payments are not paid out on a Saturday or Sunday so if you sell an item on Friday and have set pay outs to daily you wont receive payment to your bank until Monday or Tuesday. You will get a notification via email when you have received a pay out.

If a buyer requests a return ebay will hold on to any money until the return is processed, if you have insufficient funds held with them to cover the return then ebay can take the money direct from your bank account. Obviously private sellers have less returns but if the refund is "item not as described "private sellers are still obligated to accept the return and must cover the cost of return postage.

To register for managed payments I had to send them photo ID and a screen shot from my bank statement that matched my name and I had to supply my bank account and sort code details.

That sounds very intrusive, and really not acceptable at all that they make you wait until Monday if someone buys something at a weekend. Awful.
