What time does sunrise start??

Have got the idea soon to go to a spot close to home where I think we'll get a beautiful sunrise but not sure what time we need to be there!

Just checked my weather app which says sunrise is at 7.40 today but it's basically light outside already so that's too late.

Anyone know how long before official 'sunrise' time the actual sun appears first??

So as I want us to get there completely in the dark but not be sat for hours in pitch black timing is essential!!

It's not long, maybe about 10-20 minutes? But it doesn't last long - a few weeks ago I saw a lovely sunrise, so I quickly got dressed to run out to the hill behind the house to take a picture - you can see down to the whole city, so time it right and its spectacular, but I was a few mins too late.

BBC website says 7.50 for sunrise here and right now (15 mins before) there's quite a nice red sky that's going to develop nicely over the next 5-10 mins.

Starts at 7:30 then rapidly gets lighter.

BarbaraofSeville · 24/11/2020 07:39

Oh, I now see you're 15 mins before. Maybe your sunrise app is giving a different time to mine.

Here its just getting light be the sun is still under the horizon, but that is at the top of a hill so might make a difference?

It depends where you live!

CherryPavlova · 24/11/2020 07:41

It starts getting light here in the south from around 5:30 and husband is running across Downs at 6:30.
Look up nautical or astronomical sunrise for your area.

frazzledasarock · 24/11/2020 07:41

It will be slightly later each morning till the winter solstice.

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 24/11/2020 07:41

It starts to get light about an hour before sunrise in the winter. The world goes from black night with maybe ambient light from built up areas or the moon or stars, to there being a deep blue sky, to a dim monochrome world. Then slowly colour starts to develop. There is plenty of light by the time the sun eventually comes up.

(Too many pre-dawn, pre-work winter dog walks!)

This cannot be answered.
Depending on where you live ( even different parts of UK ) will have various sunrise/sunset times.

BarbaraofSeville · 24/11/2020 07:42

This is here, now, vs a sunrise time of 7.50 according to BBC weather.

As pp said, it depends on where you live.

Tessiot · 24/11/2020 08:01

There is a great website here that shows the light by searchable location, from the dead of 'night', though Astronomical Twilight, Nautical Twilight, Civil Twilight and Daylight.

Sunrise is so last year, you really need to get woke and watch the Twilight - so much more going on.

Thank you! I know it depends where I am but surely the 'build up time' is fairly constant so if the advertised sunrise is 7.40 then it starts to change around an hour before??

Will check out some of those links

An hour earlier.
