Just as the title says really, looking for some ideas to download onto the kindle to read together in the evening. He's 7, behind in reading so want to spend more time reading together & less tooth pulling biff chip & flipping kipper 😂 so far we've tried Harry Potter but as he's seen the films isn't that worried about reading it, some roald Dahl which we both like, secret seven, he liked the idea of but was "too old fashioned" I'd lust like some other ideas to try if anyone has some suggestions. Am off to work so may not reply until later in the day- thanks 😊

My DSs are 8 and 7 and they love the Terry Pratchett short story collections - the witch's vacuum cleaner, dragons at crumbling castle, and the time-travelling cave man.

I also read chapter books to them before bed, recently I've read them my family and other animals, 5 children and it, and the lives of christopher chant by diana wynne jones.

My kids love the Deadly Seven series by Garth Jennings- two books out so far, with another one due out next year (publication delayed by Covid). The Seven Deadly Sins are incarnated as friendly monsters, and they team up to help a boy.

Horrid Henry? Diary of a Wimpy Kid? Classics such as Narnia, Treasure Island, Jungle Book etc.

Ormally · 23/11/2020 15:32

The Tashi books?

MotherPiglet · 23/11/2020 15:36

I loved Horrid Henry at that age!

I think David Walliams childrens books are for that sort of age, my nephews enjoyed his books.

I was going to suggest Harry Potter but you've tried that..

AngryPrincess · 23/11/2020 15:58

Alfie Bloom and the Sectrets of Hexbridge Castle
Mr Gum, (funny and surreal)
Herbert’s Wormhole
Creature Keepers

Also my reluctant reader liked Asterix, Tintin and Astrosaurs.

BillywigSting · 23/11/2020 16:03

My ds is really into marge in charge atm and a bit of Roald Dahl.

Beast quest is good too

Needsomezzzz · 23/11/2020 16:06

Tom Fletcher, mine loves them. We are on The Danger Gang at the moment

suzuki650 · 23/11/2020 17:58

Thank you, will try all of those suggested. It's hard because I've always found reading easy & read in all my spare time as a child but he's just not a fan. So hoping just casual reading together will help a bit.

David Walliams
How to Train Your Dragon
The Christmasaurus

How about some non-fiction books such as those from Usborne or the "You Wouldn't Want to Be..." series of history books? Or the Horrible Histories series? My ds, 9 now, loves anything non-fiction and still enjoys all of these. He also likes the history books by Tony Robinson.

Smartiepants79 · 23/11/2020 18:42

My personal opinion is he’s too young for Harry Potter.
My 7 year old loves Claude, the bolds, mr gum, Micheal morpurgo, agent weasel, Matt haig,

Raindropsonrosesand · 23/11/2020 20:44

Mr Penguin, Toto the ninja cat, x story treehouse (13, 26, 39 etc...)

DrDiva · 23/11/2020 20:53

Dav Pilkey, the Dog Man books and Captain Underpants.

Xiaoxiong · 24/11/2020 09:38

I caught DS(7) reading a stack of Pug books under the duvet last night - they're by Laura James (Captain Pug, Pirate Pug, etc.) He has another one called Pugs of the Frozen North that he loves too by Philip Reeves.

Others I remembered, he likes the Violet books by Harriet Whitehorn, Mango and Bambang, and the Ottoline books.

Itmaybeus · 24/11/2020 10:17

David walliams,
diary of a wimpy kid,
flat Stanley,
captain underpants,
battersea dogs home series,
daisy and the... Series,
Tom Gates.

ritzbiscuits · 24/11/2020 11:03

My 7 yo has just finished The Danger Gang. He read it independently but it would be a nice book to read together. Has a few pictures and different text styles to make the pages interesting. The hardback is a good price at the moment £6/£7 so I'd pay for it in physical form rather than Kindle.

suzuki650 · 24/11/2020 19:32

Lovely thanks everyone. Fingers crossed it helps

Oh yes, as xiaoxiong says, the Violet books are great: really fun adventure books.

The Hotel Flamingo ones are good too

Bilingualspingual · 28/11/2020 20:04

Treehouse books. Mr Gum is hilarious.
