Help! So worried I've endangered newborn

Born this afternoon, all going fantastically but I was concentrating on something and I somehow dribbled (!) and a bit went in/near her mouth!

I wiped it off but so worried I could have given her something like the herpes virus which I know is so dangerous for newborns, I don't have any cold sores or anything but have had two in my lifetime so know I do have the virus and that it can still be transmitted without an outbreak

Help! Will she be ok? Feel daft asking midwives

Yes she'll be absolutely fine. Please don't feel like you can't speak to the midwives for reassurance though.

Hi OP
Congratulations on your baby, enjoy this newborn bubble, it's so lovely and flies by.
I wouldn't worry, the chances of anything negative happening from this instance seem minute, though I appreciate you want to protect your baby from absolutely everything you possibly can.

You've just been carrying your baby literally inside of you for nine months, sharing a vascular system, food, all sorts of hormones, antibodies, and body fluids. Dribbling a bit of saliva into their mouth is meaningless.

Just to make you feel better about speaking to the midwives - after my baby was born, I rung the buzzer for them as he'd turned his head to the side in his cot and I wanted to know if it was safe or not 😂 I blame hormones and tiredness on that one.

Pleasehelpadvice · 23/11/2020 04:41

Thank you! Not even my first baby but struck by fear of all the possible things that could happen

I remember this bit before. Still a bit worried though! It's on my mind because I was worried DC1 had a cold sore and that it could hurt the baby but luckily it didn't turn out to be one!

I guess though not advised plenty of people do kiss babies on the lips and the vast majority of the time everything is fine?!

I presume you kiss her? Cuddle her? Possibly even breastfeed her? A bit of saliva is not an issue at all.

Pleasehelpadvice · 23/11/2020 04:42

@Albgo the midwives here have been so amazing, but last time I was too scared to use my buzzer. This time I heard the women opposite use their's and have very helpful friendly midwives so I tried mine to ask about how snuffly the baby was and I got a slightly scary midwife who was polite but did look at me like I was a bit mad 😂

She will be fine Smile

Please don't worry at all.

This. She'll be fine OP.

Thank you 😅 any other last words of calm and reassurance before I try to move on (/find something new to worry about!)

Oh OP, I know what's that like. I've got three children from baby to 17years and there is something new to worry about for each one every week it seems! I'm in a constant state of worry over one of them for something.

BogRollBOGOF · 23/11/2020 07:47

DS1 was dropped on his head into the crib (my strength gave out, and there was no point in constantly finding the buzzer or attempting to use it)
Very bright lovely child who's nearly 10.

OP when my DD was 6 days old my 10 year old kissed her with an active cold sore. We had explained to elder DD not to kiss her but she forgot and I saw her kiss her from the other side of the room. We had a peads app the same way for potential jaundice and I was still in floods of tears when we got there m. The peads consultant looked at me as if I was mad and said some babies go home to siblings who have chicken pox etc, she will be fine. At the time I was quite upset with the deadpan way she had talked to me but actually it made me feel better overall. She also said that because I have had cold sores in the past immunity would have been passed to DD whilst pregnant.

DD was fine.. I was a wreck for a few days though. Please try not to worry. Congratulations!!

Hope you're feeling a bit less fretful this afternoon OP
