Braces as an adult

I’m in my early thirties and have moderately crooked teeth - they’re not so bad that they definitely need sorting but they’re bad enough for it to niggle at me. It’s the top row that bothers me most, perhaps because they’re more visible, and it’s played on my mind more over the past few years. However, ironically, I think I’ll be self-conscious of how they’ll look.
Has anybody had dental braces as an adult? Is Invisalign worth the significant price difference or are more visible braces just as good (by that I mean did the fact they’re more obvious not bother you)? I’d appreciate anybody sharing any experiences they have. Thank you.

I had braces in my 20s and I'm so glad I did. My teeth were too bad for invisalign so I had 2 years of metal train tracks but it was so worth it in the end.

I had mine about 6 years ago when I was aged 36 ‘train track’ braces on upper teeth for approx 18 months then composites bonding (3 upper) and new crown. Cost about £3k in total

I'm considering this as well OP.

I actually looked into invisalign, but I would have needed attachments on my teeth, and I kind of thought that it would take away from the whole point of invisalign.

Also, a close friend had inviasalign, and had a terrible lisp the whole way through.

I am looking into it again, but I think I will just go for a fixed brace, supposedly they may work quicker too.

Just need to pull my finger out about it, but I know it will make a huge difference to my self esteem. My teeth are very crooked, and it does get me down quite a bit, although my friend said not to bother as most people just look in people's eyes, not at their teeth, but to say I am self conscious would be an understatement.

@Monkeytapper wow! Thanks so much for sharing, certainly makes me want to pull my finger out and get things sorted!

I was worried about having them as an adult but hardly anyone noticed until I pointed them out.
I should have had them done when I was younger but I chickened out so waited over 20 years till I finally sorted them out. So pleased I did.

We're all wearing masks at the moment anyway so perfect time!
I'm booking a consult soon.
To be honest I rarely smile widely or show my teeth at the moment so I doubt anyone would notice.

I had train tracks put on a month ago. Top set first, then the bottom set will be put on just before Christmas. Mine have clear brackets and a white wire.

No one really notices them, they don't bother me either, slight pressure when they are tightened. I figured it would be worth it for a year, to have lovely teeth for life.

Dentist anticipates them being on about 9 months, and then I will have a permanent retainer.

I recently had '6 month smiles'. Train track style white braces. They came off in September after about 8 months. Best decision I've made, I love them and like smiling now. Hated my snaggle tooth before. Top and bottom cost £3k. I'm 32.

PerfectPenquins · 22/11/2020 15:10

Do it! I'm 32 and mine are due off about March next year. I have train tracks, had them as a teen but teeth moved back again so after this lot il have a fixed retainer that goes on the back of the teeth. I didn't feel invisilign was worth the money, my train tracks are £500 cheaper and il use that to have them whitened after treatment. Its well worth it though.

I'm 29 and have metal train tracks right now. £2200 in total split over 14 months as a DD to the dentist. Ceramic stain and I eat coffee and curry every day and they are 2k more at my dentist. Invisalign don't correct bite issues and midline - both of mine are bad.

Notcontent · 22/11/2020 15:48

I think it’s quite common for adults to get them now. Nothing unusual. My teen dd has Invisalign and she has become so used to it she doesn’t even notice she has them on her teeth.

Lordamighty · 22/11/2020 15:52

My before & after. First picture is day one of wearing ceramic fixed braces upper & lower. Second is after 12 months treatment. It’s well worth it.
