Washing underwear on its own?

timeforanewstart · 21/11/2020 11:47

Do people really wash all underwear on its own at 60 degrees as suggested on some internet pages?
I never used to just in with normal clothes wash , always keep tea towels etc seperate .
But after reading thought i would try.
But then it means leaving underwear to wash maybe once a week but still a quarter load and slowest 60 wash in my machine is 1.30 hrs
Currently i wash darks , coloureds , whites , underwear , towels , tea towels , bedding , face masks , floor clothes all in separate washes thats 9 separate washes minimum but normally have at least 2 dark washes a week and 2 coloured , and then theres the dog beds which i wash prob fornightly and always run machine on 95 service wash after
But struggling to keep up at moment working full time with so many washes and time they take
Quickest wash is 15 mins but nothing really goes in this so next up is 58 mins full wash , but 60 all over an hr
How do others divide theres ?

I wash underwear with other clothes and tea towels. I'm still alive, as are my family.

Everything! I don’t wash people with my knickers...

UglyHoose · 21/11/2020 11:50

Washing detergent will get rid of most germs so I often bung them in with other stuff. Or if I am doing a load of towels or bedding, which is several times a week then I stick them in with them.

SausageRoll2020 · 21/11/2020 11:50

Lingerie goes in on its own as is made of delicate fabrics so goes on the delicate cycle at 30c.

Boxer shorts are the same kind of fabric as t-shirts etc so just go in the the normal lights / darks wash, also at 30c.

Same here.

SpillingTheTea · 21/11/2020 11:52

60 degrees?! My underwear would probably be a piece of string at the end of a hot wash.
But no, they go in with other stuff.
What a waste if people do that!

IhateBoswell · 21/11/2020 11:52

Haha I’m an absolute slattern by MN standards. All washing in together (expect sheets and towels) and I also put my dog’s bowls in the dishwasher 🤷‍♀️

Lazypuppy · 21/11/2020 11:52

I do the following each week:
1 dark
1 whites
1 toddler clothes

And once every 2 weeks:
1 towels
1 bedding

My M&S bog standard cotton knickers would be fine. Grin Still wash them on 30 or 40 with everything else though! I do use biological washing powder though, if that makes a difference. I thought you weren't supposed to use bio on high temperatures anyway, because it destroys the enzymes that kill the bacteria.

timeforanewstart · 21/11/2020 12:06

And yes not all underwear can take such a high wash ?
Think I will just go back to my usual washing regime of throwing them on with clothes as i can't see how leaving then a week to 10 days is better and we have different colours
We have all been healthy enough for past 20 years , obviously if someone was ill I might treat separately.
I read these cleaning articles and think I must be a slob as I don't go as far as half these people suggest.
I wipe sides , clean toilets , hoover daily ,try to mop weekly etc
Deep clean once in a while per room.
Polish weekly and my house looks ok but these articles make me feel like I am not doing enough , the answer is not to read them I guess

They go with all the other washing. I also use anti bacterial washing aid so that helps keep things fresh. All washed on 40. Towels on 60.

reluctantbrit · 21/11/2020 12:11

M&S knickers and boxers/briefs go in at 60 degrees together with towels.that’s two loads, one white, one dark.

So far most have survived this treatment.

Expensive underwear goes with other delicate items at 30 degrees gentle cycle but I make sure ai wear panty liners with these.

PodgeBod · 21/11/2020 12:12

Way too much faff. I suppose you could put them in with towels on a high heat but I find the washing to be enough work as it it.

ShalomToYouJackie · 21/11/2020 12:12

I wash everything together, clothes, pants, tea towels and just use a colour catcher and wash at whatever temp the labels say.

timeforanewstart · 21/11/2020 12:13

I use colour catchers too but now in a mesh bag as had couple get caught in my machine filter, also bought the reusable one which seems to also work

My 30 degree washes are done by colour (whites, dark etc) and underwear goes I'm with those. I'll do a 60 wash or two each week which will bedding, towels, tea towels, masks. 60 degree wash can have any of those things in it. I certainly don't separate towels from bedding or do masks alone.

timeforanewstart · 21/11/2020 12:14

Never thought of putting in with towels , that could work as easily do couple towel loads a week

Northernsoullover · 21/11/2020 12:17

Mine all goes in together. I understand some people find this horrifying. Tea towels and towels get tumble dried in the winter or line dried in good weather. Both of these drying methods I am sure, will kill anything left. Not that I think about it. All I care about is getting it dry.

WineNotTheLabel · 21/11/2020 12:19

Wash cycles are separated into white, darks and bedding. I use 60° wash 1600 spin for everything. I do not put bras in the dryer. I quite like washing just my clothes because I do not iron anything. I fluff and fold and hang up immediately. Oh does the ironing of shirts and trousers for everyone.

I'd most definitely wash the dog's bedding separately.

ChalkDinosaur · 21/11/2020 12:20

I wash everything together (usually at 40) with a colour catcher. Only things I do separately are hand-wash/wool stuff, and if there's a load of stuff I've had to soak in stain remover. Everyone is still alive and well.

poshme · 21/11/2020 12:21

My washing divides like this:
Light/whites
Darks/colours
Towels
Double bed sheets (has to be separate as nothing else will fit)

Everything goes in one of these categories.
At 40. Line dry everything if I can.

Rarely use tumble drier.

ImNotCutOutForThis · 21/11/2020 12:26

Mine goes in with whatever is on.

I do a dark load daily. (all have dark uniform.)
A light colors alternate days.. As that's mainly all the pjs and dds uniform tops.
Whites when enough.
Towels daily with the t towels.
Bedding twice a week for every bed.

Darker brighter colors prob every few days

Lostinthevillair · 21/11/2020 12:28

Most of our washing is done at 60, it needs it by the time we've finished with it Blush. Wool gos on a wool wash. Anything delicate on 30 once enough of it has built up at the bottom of the wash basket. Probably do one dark wash a day and up to two 60 washes (one light and one dark). I think I have dyspraxia as I can't have a drink without spilling it so can't really get too mad at the kids for not being able to. The 4 year old regularly floods the bathroom as well.
