Do you know Kent very well? If not, you’ve picked a nice place to move to.
Canterbury is a lovely city and really central. Lots of things to do within a reasonably short drive or train journey. The city itself is beautiful. Very old. Make the cathedral one of your first visits. It is stunning. There’s no end of things to do there and there has always been a fantastic choice of bars and restaurants, lots of which are super old and family friendly.
It’s really close to the coast and there are a mixture of pebbled and sandy beaches. A bit further out but Dymchurch and St Mary’s Bay are two of my favourites. Deal & Whitstable are just up the road. Margate is a bit more... mixed (some bits are fantastic, there’s an art gallery and they’re re vamped Dreamlands). Other bits are rough as old boots. Rye is a reasonably short distance away and also has a nature reserve with a tiny little beach which is usually deserted, so you can often see seals there (bit of a walk to get there though). You can also do trips around the coast line from Dover.
You’ve got the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch railway (it’s miniature) that will take you from Hythe as far out as Dungeness, where there’s a nature reserve. There’s a larger steam railway in Tenterden that does trips to Bodiam. Hythe military canal hires out rowing boats and they do a Venetian carnival in the summer. There’s also a country park at the far end of the canal, which is a lovely walk and set up for bbqs at regular intervals.
You’ve got Wingham Wildlife Park, Port Lympne and Howletts (the better of the two for a day visit), the Rare Breeds Centre and Wildwood.
There are castles everywhere in Kent; Dover and Leeds are probably the best two, with Dover having lots of ww2 stuff there as well but Hever castle is really pretty as well.
There are no end of country walks, from woodland to cliff tops. There’s an Alpaca farm on the Romney Marsh.
Paul O Grady is doing a programme about Kent at the moment and is only two episodes in. Well worth a watch.
