What board games work well over zoom?

After being zoomed out months ago, we are ready to get back into it, especially if we can’t get together for Christmas. My adult son loves board games and it would be great to play with him again. Happy to buy an extra game if we need pieces at both ends, or use 2 cameras, just need some ideas of how to do it! Or any other non quiz based activities

Watching with interest as we’ll probably be doing this too.

We think we can adapt Cards Against Humanity, but haven’t tried yet.

There are some really good online escape rooms that you can do, we have done a couple of different ones. Certainly something different when you get quizzed out!!

Scattergories works well if you have several groups on a call. You don't need a copy if the actual game.

Triv so long as each person zooming has a set of cards.

Artesia · 21/11/2020 07:29

We’ve played monopoly over zoom- a board at each house so everyone can see what’s going on. Worked surprisingly well

There's a website called Board Game Arena which is really great and would allow you to play lots of different games on-screen. (There's another similar site with different games but I can't remember the name.) If you need a premium membership to start a games table (some of the games) it's only £3/month, for one of the players.

Natsel84 · 21/11/2020 07:37

We played a game called hoy , bit like a bingo game but played with a pack of cards .

TooStressyTooMessy · 21/11/2020 07:38

Not so much a board game but for an easy (ish) option we have done bingo over zoom. We have the board game style bingo if that makes sense.

TerpsichoreanMuse · 21/11/2020 07:40

Seconding board game arena. You also need premium for one of each set of players playing from the same IP address. But then you also get to specify what colour you play, so totally worth it :)

Board Game Arena looks amazing. Thank you @NightmareLoon and @TerpsichoreanMuse

I play a game several times a week called Running A Business over Zoom.

It took a while for everybody to get used to the rules but it seems to work reasonably well now. You start out with lots of money in the bank and you have to accumulate more. But you end up having to divest yourself of commercial property not accumulate it, but at least you cease paying rent! You occasionally pick up an Opportunity Card as the banker dishes out money such as "Put One of Your Staff on Furlough - Collect £200". As the money dwindles in the bank you get hit by other random acts by the banker who fails to negotiate a trade deal for all players, so you land on a square that says "Your Vehicles are Stuck at Felixstowe - Pay Tariffs of £10,000". The winner is the person who completes the game, not with the most money in the bank, but the one who can get their head round really what just happened.

Scattagories is my go to! Use this link and it refreshes with a new letter and questions each time. If you're unaware of this game it's basically just you get a letter and a list of things like-

letter A-
name an animal,
name sometbing you'd find in a bathroom etc
but you need to have the only answer in your group. So if you said alligator and someone else said it you wouldn't get he point but if No one said it you'd get the point.
Sorry if I haven't explained it very well but it's very easy!

Yahtzee is quite a good one

Breathmiller · 21/11/2020 08:50

We played yahtzee too in the first lock down. Just one game 'board' needed.

RainingBatsAndFrogs · 21/11/2020 08:51

Articulate.

Denthelp · 21/11/2020 08:53

Guess who

aimingforthesky · 21/11/2020 08:56

Tessiot I think many are already fed up with that game.

ApocalypseNowt · 21/11/2020 09:09

@Baggins83 Oooh I love an escape room! Do you have any recommendations for online ones?

babblingbrooks · 21/11/2020 09:13

Collaborative games work ok over webcam as it doesn't matter that everyone can see everyone's cards; eg. pandemic, forbidden island

TrySarahTops · 21/11/2020 09:30

Who Dares Wins works well over Zoom,

And it would need adapting, but if you like the silliness of Taskmaster and were selective over which tasks you chose, this could also work well. Last time, we had things like: most surprising hairstyle, or draw around your hand turn it into a self portrait. Honestly, we haven't laughed so much for ages than playing that game, it was hilarious. Just keep one person with the board the Taskmaster.
