Monster Cold Sores

PickledSanta · 20/11/2020 19:26

I have my first ever cold sore outbreak. DH has them but we have been together 10 years so I thought I had escaped. Apparently not. There are about 4 or 5 of them, they are huge all over my top lip. I feel awful. The stupid cream isn't working like it should. Any suggestions on how to feel less awful?

Have you tried the compeed cold sore plasters? I too had my first ever one this year and they worked perfectly.

See if you can get your GP to prescribe Valtrex tablets. Ours had worked in Australia where it is commonly prescribed and he said he didn't see why I shouldn't have some. Apparently it is quite expensive, hence GP reluctance, but it is very effective.

Go to the doctors and ask for the tablets. They are brilliant.

Don’t get them wet. Don’t pick them. Yes use the plasters. Cover them with cream and leave it on for as Long as you can.

Poundland sell ‘vitasorb’ cold sore cream for £1. Buy 10 if you see them! It’s the same as the boots £5 one.

Valtrex - not heard of that. I meant Aclovir tablets. But that sounds better

If you've got loads of big ones the cream you can buy over counter won't cut it. Ask the gp for aciclovir tablets - that will sort it as much stronger.

Get some lysine and Zovirax. Us them as soon as you feel a tingle but you can use them now to shorten the outbreak.

Then get the doctor to prescribe you some tablets, they’re amazing for big outbreaks.

The cold sore virus is notoriously worse on your first outbreak than it should be in future. I got a mouth full of sores (all inside me mouth) the first time I got them. So hopefully it will never be as bad again.

I second GP for antiviral tablets - if not doing face to face then email a picture in.

I had acyclovir tablets after suffering with sore for over 40 years with them and I very rarely get one now and when I do it is usually just a single blister.

You would benefit too from generally improving your immune system. Vitamin D if you aren't already taking it plus vitamin C and zinc tablets.

The first time is always the worst!! My first one I looked like I'd been punched in the mouth it swelled up so much. It's been nowhere near as bad since then.
