For what reason did you choose to move house?

Just being nosy really,

I’ve noticed that lots of houses in the area where I live are for sale. There are 4 up for sale in my street alone.

We live in a nice area so I was just wondering why so many people wanted to move. I understand times are hard so I am really hoping it’s just for a change of scenery, new job, bigger house etc and not due to affordability issues.

So I suppose my question is, what made you move house?

Bigger house, bigger garden, office to wfh in...might not happen now as our buyer is an utter twat and we're very close to breaking point with it.

Disability. Couldn't manage the stairs and no stairlift could be installed.

Neighbours turned out to be shitheads, he lost his job-drink driving, started throwing the girlfriend round, blasting music 7pm - 7am. We moved ASAP. We then moved after a year, the house was lovely, but quite small and not suitable for more than 2 adults.

It was a long time ago but we needed a bigger place.

I was relocating with work. So it was a choice of stay in the old house and do a new job or move to a new house and keep my old role. It also made sense because it meant we were closer to where DH was working too. However 20 years later neither of us work for the employers we used to.

Needed somewhere bigger and closer to amenities.
When the children were small a tiny remote village with a little school was perfect. As they grew I became a taxi service.
So we moved closer to facilities.

Each time we've moved it's been due to relocation.

If we ever do it again it'll be to downsize now the DC are grown. Neither of us can imagine leaving this house for the forseeable, we love it even though it's too big for us now.

Split with DP, and to get better support services for DC.

I did mull over how nice it would be to move to an isolated, detached house during lockdown when the neighbours were home all day!

I moved into my current house 16 years ago. It’s a council house and before the bidding system so we were just invited to look at it and pretty much had to say yes. We were being moved out of the flat we were in as the lease had ended on the block and wasn’t going to be renewed. It’s a nice 3 bed house with a garden in a rural location so although there is a group of houses it certainly isn’t an estate. We got lucky.

In the future I may look at downsizing and moving into a town for convenience when I’m older and the children moved away but it’s nice to know it will be a choice as my tenancy is a life one.

Last time we moved (over 20 years ago) it was because we wanted a bigger house (we had a toddler and I was pregnant). We would happily have stayed in the same area but couldn't afford a bigger house there, so moved out of London to a small town with a good rail service.

We won't move again unless we need to downsize or move to a bungalow. With a bit of luck we'll be here another 10 years, but my husband is now 70 so we'll have to wait and see what the future brings.

1st house combination of concerns over large housing development on neighbouring field (development took 20 years to complete) and move to bigger detached house

2nd moved across country for dh's new job

Inheritance. And then it was extended.

TheGreatWave · 23/11/2020 08:29

Mainly to get a 4th bedroom. However I had never been truly happy in that house, and the layout didn't work for us.

The house we have is nothing like what we set out looking for, but I love it.
