What was your most terrifying experience?

For me it was being winched up into helicopter after I fell and injured myself.

Followed closely by me and a friend aged 12 getting cut off by the tide and having to be rescued by RNLI. We didnt have phones so had to scream for help and were eventually heard. It was pitch black.

The three hour race through horrendous rain to a hospital in another county after a police phone call to say my DM had been involved in a serious car accident.
We didn't know she was already dead.

PolarnOPirate · 20/11/2020 20:31

Feel very lucky to say I don’t think I’ve ever been terrified, but scariest probably firework exploding without taking off (massive diameter, it seemed to spread as wide as the field we were in. No one was hurt luckily (home display on friend’s land)). Over too quickly to be terrifying really!

Or in retrospect I’m terrified what could of happened when I went into the Australian outback with a man and his gun to see the sights - so naive! Luckily he was a good guy but fucking hell.

Babyroobs · 20/11/2020 20:32

@CrimsonCattery

Had three very scary car crashes at high speeds. One was my fault as I was v tired and nodded off momentarily and the other two were being swerved into on the motorway (by a lorry and a white van). Either walked away with not a scratch or just bruising but geninely thought I would die each time. Another time I narrowly avoided being ploughed into when a car didn't notice the stationary traffic queuing before the exit. Saw them coming in the rear mirror and had to get into gear and pulled into the hard shoulder in a spilt second. The car missed the one on front of me by an inch as it swerved into the thankfully empty middle lane. I was shaking like a leaf.

Unsurprisingly I am a very cautious driver. After the lorry incident I took some advanced driving lessons on the motorway as I was struggling mentally with overtaking large vehicles.

Similar experience here. I collided with a lorry, spun round and ended up the wrong way on the M1. Fortunately no -one was injured but it was utterly terrifying. I still struggle with overtaking lorries and hate motorway driving.

Being chased by a female attacker with a knife.

In Cornwall

noneedforthat · 20/11/2020 20:37

Similar to Anyfucker, being told I couldn’t possibly be in any pain despite having dozens of stitches on down below following surgery age 19 .

They wouldn’t even give me paracetomal, a buzzer or initially a bed even - just a theatre trolley .

Diagnosed with PTSD several years later .

NHS admitted they screwed up but said there’s nothing they can do to help .

nevernotstruggling · 20/11/2020 20:38

The crash c section of dd1 where they were running to the theatre with me on the trolley. I'm grateful every day that dd1 and I survived that night.

When exh kicked the front door down.

One day in 2014 when I lost dd1 on the beach. I lost her long enough to know I needed help from lifeguards etc. Nothing happens she had walked right back to the tent where she thought I was but I thought she had drowned because I took my eye off the ball.

I'm humbled and grateful my experiences are nothing compared to others on this thread x

Being beaten by my mother. I was beated a lot but three stand out. Once at Christmas, we were supposed to be getting a tree when my dad got home. I don't know what I did to deserve it, but my dad walked in to find her holding me down on the sofa and slapping me over and over. I was six. I think that was one of the years she refused to get up on Christmas day.

Another from a similar age. I must have actually been younger because my sibling wasn't born where she shut me in my room for hours. Shewas on the other side of the door and every time I tried to open it she slammed it back. My granny was there pleading and crying for me to be let out. I just kept trying but she didn't stop until my dad came home.

The last was when she knocked me to the floor aged and was kicking my face and head. I remember being curled in a ball hoping she'd stop. I eventually lay still and hoped she'd kill me.

lifeinlimbo2020 · 20/11/2020 20:42

@southern82

Been on a ride at a theme park when I was 17 and as it went upside down and was held there, my bar across my knees moved and I started falling out. I had a bar above me that I had to hold onto. I honestly thought I was going to die.
O. M. G. That's truly terrifying.
lifeinlimbo2020 · 20/11/2020 20:49

@LangClegTheBeardedVulture

Finding my brother trying to commit suicide.
Oh god. Awful. I'm so sorry.
StormBaby · 20/11/2020 20:50

@ilovebagpuss I had a landing like that coming into London 6 years ago and haven’t been on a plane since. The wind caught us just as we touched down and tipped the wing that I was sat right over down to the tarmac, there was a terrifying crashing sound from the landing gear, the pilot realised he wasn’t going to make it so we shot back up into the sky vertically like a fucking space rocket. There was no gentle climb like a normal take off. The whole plane was deathly silent where everyone thought they were going to die. Never been so relieved to get onto the ground

That’s so awful to read. I am so sorry you had such a terrible childhood. I hope your life is good now.
Twatalert · 20/11/2020 20:58

Being admitted to hospital at 4 or 5 without a parent staying. They just left me there. I kept wondering whether they will ever come back. If I will ever see them again.

I struggle to this day.

AnyFucker · 20/11/2020 20:58

Some truly awful things on this thread

Flowers to all

Browniegal13 · 20/11/2020 21:02

Three things:

  • being told my 33 year old husband was terminally ill and would have no more than 6months to live
  • six months after his death, my six year old daughter contracted meningitis and ecoli. I thought I was going to loose her too.
  • loosing my 10 year old in a National Trust forest. He was gone for 50mins. The police sent a helicopter up to try to find him and were assembling a team to search the lake. All this time he was safe in a out building 5km away, we just didn’t know it!
Twinkie01 · 20/11/2020 21:02

My dad threatening to cut my hand off with a cleaver when my mother was holding my hand down on the table. I was 6. My sister had stolen 20p as we wanted to see what they looked like.

I can't remember any more knives involved in his and my stepmothers abuse of us but it was a shit childhood.

I've just found out he's v ill after being no contact for 20 years. I hope he suffers a long drawn out death.

SilverOtter · 20/11/2020 21:02

@StormyInTheNorth that is so incredibly sad, I'm sorry you went through that. I hope you have been able to access whatever support you need to process some of it x

Thanks for all on this thread, there are some truly terrifying stories x

nevernotstruggling · 20/11/2020 21:03

@StormyInTheNorth that's fucking terrible. You reminded me though that I walked into the kitchen when I was 5/6 and my dad was standing over my mum lying on the floor and hold her down by her hair. Also the penny just dropped why my mum cut off all her hair when she left my dad.

thaegumathteth · 20/11/2020 21:07

Being told I had sepsis (I did but I was ok)

My 3 year old having double pneumonia and nobody listening to me and being sent home from hospital and GPs repeatedly.

NotQuiteUsual · 20/11/2020 21:08

Being prepared in the back of the ambulance, for what to expect would happen when we arrived at resus with our unresponsive toddler. Shes absolutely fine now and the seizure just caused her to fall into a very heavy sleep, not even poking her eyeballs got a response.

Bagelsandbrie · 20/11/2020 21:10

Some awful things here. I’m so sorry to those people who have suffered such horrendous things.

I think for me it was during my elective section with my second child. I had opted for a section due to a very traumatic first vaginal birth and everything was going wonderfully, I’d been so healthy throughout the whole pregnancy, walking everywhere, feeling great. I even did some gardening the day before the c section. Everything started fine and then suddenly they announced I had undiagnosed placenta prévia. I’d had no bleeding or signs whatsoever. They took ages to control the bleeding and I lost nearly 3 litres of blood. I will never forget the surgeons face as she shook her head as if to say the bleeding wasn’t stopping. Most horrific moment. But they did manage to stop it and 3 transfusions later I was fine... and I’m still here 8 years on (and so is ds)!

Diversion · 20/11/2020 21:14

Being told that my unborn baby most likely had a chromosome issue incompatible with life - she is now almost 23, amazing, beautiful and healthy :D

itsmeagainagain · 20/11/2020 21:17

Such awful stories I’m sorry for all of you but the ones that just absolutely break by heart are the ones where people’s own parents have been abusive to them as children I just can’t wrap my head round it and it just devastates me to hear it ... big hugs to all of you xx

Daisychainsandglitter · 20/11/2020 21:17

When the children's hospital told me they were putting DD1 (3 weeks old at the time) into a coma after she crashed in front of us on the way to getting some tests done.
It was about 1am too and everything was still which seemed to add to the awfulness of it all. Luckily she pulled through and is now 6 Smile

PurpleFrames · 20/11/2020 21:18

Coming round in intensive care after I tried to kill myself.

My exH biting me in the face before sexually assaulting me.

Being restrained by 5 men and forceably medicated on an inpatient mental health ward, left with bruises for weeks.
