12yr old Y7 twins with very different body clocks. They go to bed around 9.15 during the week. DS asleep within seconds of head hitting pillow and wakes around 6.45 every day (including weekend). DD reads until 10-10.30, goes to sleep around 11 and needs to be dragged out of bed for school. (If you turn her lights off at 9 she's still awake until 11.) At the weekend she sleeps in for hours.
Essentially one takes after me and the other after their dad. If I just had DS, I'd get him in bed by 9 as I think he'd go straight to sleep. If I just had DD I wouldn't be fussed about getting her to bed until later as there's no chance of her sleeping before 10.30 or so.
Screens off by 9 (unless there's a football match or something).

My 12 years old go to bed/lights out around 11:30. He has always been a bad sleeper, never went to bed before 9 even as a toddler. Wake up totally fine at 7 though.

Mine is also 13 in June. We send her up at 9pm (so we can have an hour to ourselves basically!) but she then puts herself to bed with a fair bit of pottering and audiobooks - she's generally got her lights off by the time we go up around 10.15...

Reading these replies I’m struck by everyone saying their child ‘goes upstairs’ at X time.
Am I the only person with a teen who spends all night in their room and wouldn’t dream of being downstairs with us all evening?

I’m mean and don’t let mine spend all evening in their rooms. Well they have the option of being downstairs with us watching tv etc or upstairs but their phones etc need to be downstairs so they usually choose to be with us rather than in their rooms phoneless. They are young teens though.

My daughter is a little bit older (but not much) and there's no way she would ever got her homework done if she'd been sent to bed at 9pm or not allowed electronic devices after 8pm. Even my 8 year old doesn't get home from his swimming club until about 9pm.

My 12 yr old turn 13 in January and goes to bed at 9pm.

@wellthatsunusual they are obviously allowed phones etc if using them for Teams or whatever for homework. I just mean if they’re watching tiktok videos and similar.

Also when clubs are on yes we are often not back until later but currently they have from 3:30 until bedtime to get things done.

@worriedwellworrier DD likes to watch TV before dinner so we have the living room teen-free after that. She prefers to chill out on her own.

@wellthatsunusual I would agree at times when clubs are on but at the moment she has just zoom meetings/lessons and therefore plenty of time to start on homework after a break from school. Turning over the laptop at 7.30pm is absolutely fine and she can play on her phone until dinner as well. Most people do need a break from electronics before bedtime, children and adults.
