£300m for sport, of which £14m is for women's sport

And that's counting tennis money as all women's sport. Well there is another £40m for horse racing, so maybe that counts.

Says a lot about who decided this?

Links?

JingsMahBucket · 20/11/2020 13:53

I hate it when people don’t provide links for context. Just seems like they’re ranting to themselves in the mirror otherwise.

Whhhyyyyyy is Rugby getting so much more than anyone else? Not what you were asking op, but I’m not sure if this is something I should be allowing to annoy me yet. Smile

nosswith · 20/11/2020 18:44

Rugby Union is supported by the local Tories where I live. Or should I say, the cheating groundstealers Saracens that have been relegated for breaching salary rules.

I noticed the amount given to horse racing too. Have we become so blatant about the corruption in Britain now?

BecomeStronger · 20/11/2020 19:07

It's financial support for struggling businesses essentially. Women's sport is a tiny % of professional sport, that may well be wrong but the businesses needing support don't exist in the same way.

SpeckleDust · 20/11/2020 19:18

Nothing for swimming, one of the most inclusive sports - open to everyone, particularly import to those with disabilities.

Swimming pools are pretty expensive to maintain, made harder when forced to close for long periods of time. Most swimming clubs rely on well-attended meets/galas to break even, all cancelled this year.

It’s as if the government are only funding sports that earn sufficient money for them to make it worth them ‘investing’ in. Oh and the ones they want to watch...

Well yes, it's about supporting the economy. The economy that pays for health, education, policing, defence etc etc

nosswith · 21/11/2020 07:32

Have to agree about swimming. I objected to the closure of outdoor pools and other outdoor sports in this current English set of restrictions.

Agree with PPs, it's not funding for sport, it's funding for businesses involved in sport.

lljkk · 21/11/2020 07:51

I thought barely any black women were in swimming, is it really that 'inclusive'? I read this has to do with hair straightening - don't yell at me, that info is everywhere.

How on earth is greyhound racing a sport for anything other than the greyhounds and I guess maybe the trainers who exercise them. At least horseriding involves a human. I understand that the dogs will need to be looked after but this is no different to zoo animals. Though having seen a few retired greyhounds I imagine the young dogs from this season will be less stressed than usual when they retire.

WTF are you on about?
nosswith · 21/11/2020 16:46

@lljkk issues such as the one you raise are real and act as a barrier to women's participation in exercise. Gym knickers, period poverty, for example, are others.
