Birthday outing for elderly parents in London...

Dear Friends

Please can you suggest where I might take my 80 year old mother for her birthday?

My father had a heart problem earlier in the year and was hospitalised but instead of curing him they gave him Covid too! He's lucky to be alive now and got over the infection but is left incapacitated so struggles talk and walk for any length. Since March we have not gone out anywhere! I as their son do all the shopping.

I've bought a wheelchair for dad and since he missed his birthday I hope to surprise both mum and dad with a joint birthday treat by taking them out!

We live in south London near Balham but can travel. Dad has been asking what the Christmas lights are like this year but I don't think he realises how cold and dark it is now!

Any suggestions where I could take them somewhere nice with low risk of Covid and with wheelchair access in London that both an elderly woman and man would enjoy?

I think the tickets for the lights at Kew are sold out but you could still go to the gardens and walk around once/if restrictions are lifted

I forgot to mention her Birthday is this weekend 21-22 so many venues I considered are closed or affected by lockdown!

Annoying! How about Richmond Park?

Local black cab drivers round here are advertising trips where you hire them for a few hours to see the Xmas lights. The cab could take you to Oxford St, Regent St, Covent Garden, Fortnums windows and Tate Britain, for example. It is quite covid secure as you would be separated from the driver by a screen and would fit a wheelchair, though of course nothing is completely risk free.
I would say though that strictly speaking I am not sure that jaunts to see Xmas lights are a reasonable excuse to leave the house in lockdown legally, even if it is for a birthday. Sad
Kew Gardens is a good idea, weather dependent. It is open but not the houses. Don't know about the lights.
