Is there a board game that's really good for just 2 players?

I want to get a board game that me and DH can play together. Is there a board game out there that works really well with just 2 players? I know most of them say they can be played with 2 players but it's almost always not as good as it is with 3+ players. Any recommendations?

A game called Tsuro, although it's comparatively dear. Good with 2 or 3.

Odin's Ravens
Agamemmnon

^both designed for 2 players!

DH and I also play Takenoko, Photosynthesis, Silk, Gonuts for Donuts, Sushi Go, and Qwirkle as 2 player and they work well Smile

Good games specifically for 2 players:

Rivals for Catan
7 Wonders Duel
Santorini
Patchwork
Targi
Brainmaster
Star Realms
Jaipur
Code Names Duet

@Allthenumbers

I second Pandemic!
Isn’t that a game for 70million?
Hiccupiscal · 19/11/2020 14:17

Place marking as never heard of most of these.
Pandemic made me laugh, until i realised it actually was a game!!

wrensandrobins · 19/11/2020 14:21

Placemarking!

Squirrelonwheels · 19/11/2020 14:22

Already mentioned by pps but definitely Jaipur - can only be played by two so is perfect!

KnowlWay · 19/11/2020 14:23

Patchwork is only for two which I love. Qwirkle and Ingenious are my faves.

ivelostmytrousers · 19/11/2020 15:42

I love Twilight Struggle and if you like modern history too it might be up your street. One player is communist Russia one player is the USA and you compete against each other by reacting to real events that occurred. Takes a while to get the hang of (although there's loads of help and advice online). https://www.gameyore.com/gmt-games-twilight-struggle-deluxe-edition?store=uk&gclid=CjwKCAiAzNj9BRBDEiwAPsL0d9eGczMS8tiG8c8ED1-mTZxI-KZdeWWu7aB8Nf9dh9R1wKhhsvuBoCUy0QAvD_BwE

Second Carcasonne, Patchwork, Tsuro and Jaipur.

There has been a rise in 2 player 'worker placement' games, mostly coming from Germany. They are expensive but good for presents, well made and quite varied. DH and I have built up quite a collection over the years and favour the following. Some can be played with more than 2 players but there are adaptations for 2/more.

Agricola
Caverna
Viticulture
Nusfjord
At the Gates of Loyang

We also have a Feast for Odin which we haven't broached yet! The website boardgamegeek will give independent reviews, play throughs and ideas.

If you want something a bit less serious, try King of Tokyo or Smash Up.

As for card games, there's things like cribbage and bezique.

IThinkIMadeItWorse · 19/11/2020 15:46

Lots already mentioned but we love Hanabi and it works well with 2 (cooperative card game).

Stompythedinosaur · 19/11/2020 15:58

Duke is my absolute favourite, but tatso, hive, codenames duet and khet are all great too.

Bearnecessity · 19/11/2020 15:58

Backgammon.

@LongPauseNoAnswer

We love playing Yahtzee. I am not great with strategy games like chess so this one is a nice mix of chance and strategy. We play it every day Smile
Another vote for Yahtzee! Smile
Housewife2010 · 19/11/2020 16:57

Definitely Othello and Backgammon.

Breathmiller · 19/11/2020 16:59

Another vote for Rummikub.
One of the favourites in our household.
Took it on holiday with us and my daughter and her partner loved it so much they snaffled it and still have it.
Guess what they're getting for Christmas?
