Annoyed with aldi and their stinky sanitary pads!

I went to aldi to stock up on cheap basics for the first time since the spring - I’ve been ill with long Covid so have been having tesco deliveries.

Stocked upon sanpro and they got left in the hall for a couple of days. The hall stinks - I couldn’t work out what it was at first. It’s not a nice smell either - horrible cheap perfume. “Lightly scented”, my arse (actually that sums up the issue). Why anyone thinks I would want that near my foof is a mystery. Instant thrush waiting to happen.

DD2 brought home some cheap scented toilet roll someone had left in her uni house a while back. Within days both of us had thrush. We had to brand it “the men’s toilet roll” and make the two blokes of the house use it up. No way am I risking that with these (and DH won’t find a use for them!).

The pads are going straight back to aldi and they’re going to damn well refund but I’m annoyed I should have to. If I’d only bought one pack I’d chuck them but I stocked up.

I’ve been resisting reusables because I’m nearing the end of my period days but I think they’re going to have to be the way to go. If anyone has any recommendations I’d be grateful.

Did it say they were scented? I mean...WHO uses those by choice?? Rather than reusables, have you considered those period pants?

They are reusables but a bit better imo. www.modibodi.com/?gclid=CjwKCAiAzNj9BRBDEiwAPsL0d94CPcMskY6j-OzbmriiKzmmaGBFsHf7mSB15u35cNbu3Fwl2sPTLhoC6MQQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

Furious on your behalf. All Always towels are scented now too!

It's disgraceful. My babies pampers nappies were scented too - I'd run out of my normal brand. I don't know what they are doing to us with all these bloody fragrances.

Tesco /Superdrug etc own brand are unscented but reusables are probably a safer bet.

HappydaysArehere · 19/11/2020 09:31

I was offered “scented” liners (Tena) in place of the normal ones I ordered. I refused them with a shudder. Who wants to purchase an itchy whatnot? Cannot understand the makers thinking it is a good idea.

Ugh. I was caught out by always normal towels the other day. They have a tiny tiny sentence on the side saying "contains a light scent."

If you're going to scent them at least put it on the front in bold!

LemonadeFromLemons · 19/11/2020 10:12

Asda own brand sanitary towels, I swear by them.

No way I’m putting anything perfumed down there, it’s making me feel itchy thinking about it :-/

RozHuntleysStump · 19/11/2020 10:19

It’s horrendous. My old favourite always nighttime super pads are now scented. I order those naturecare ones from amazon now.

tofuschnitzel · 19/11/2020 10:21

I hate it when that happens! Bodyform have a good range of unscented sanitary towels. I've never come across scented Bodyform sanpro in the shops, though they have a few scented options on their website. Sainsbury's also have unscented sanpro in their own brand. I think Boots and Superdrug own brands also have unscented pads.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 19/11/2020 10:22

Get some reusable ones, no chemicals and so comfy.

jessstan1 · 19/11/2020 10:25

You don't have to buy scented ones, I never did when I had periods. Mine had no trace of scent. Just buy your pads from somewhere else. Boots and Lloyds sell all types and despatch quickly and I'm sure other supermarkets do the same or you could buy some in bulk from Amazon.

ChrissyPlummer · 19/11/2020 10:26

Always Infinty are unscented as are Lidl own brand (Siempre?). I think most supermarket own brand do an unscented version.

musicposy · 19/11/2020 11:02

Glad I’m not the only one who thinks this. Why are the manufacturers doing it? It seems to be part of a horrible culture where women have to be “fresh” at all times. Are we really back in the days where women were “unclean”? I may be overthinking it but it really feels that way at times.

Maybe some people like them, but given the amount of people who get thrush, you’d think they’d publicise it better on the packet. I had to read the small print on the back to find where it said “lightly scented” (which is incorrect, they need “pongs the house out”).

I’ve been buying tescos own brand and they are unscented. I can go back to them and hope they don’t change it. I got caught out because back in the spring so were Aldi’s and because I was after a cheap bargain. That’ll teach me!

I’m going to look into period pants as I’ve seen them mentioned quite a bit on here. How many pairs to people generally need?

I buy Aldi sanitary towels and mine are not scented...which ones did you buy?

ThomasHardyPerennial · 19/11/2020 15:52

Why do you expect Aldi to refund you? Sounds like you just bought the wrong ones, which is your mistake.

PerfectionistProcrastinator · 19/11/2020 16:08

I always buy the light pink always pads as they are non scented. But got caught out the other day when I bought panty liners and they were scented! Surely there’s no good reason for a panty liner to be scented seeing as they’re for such light flow!

There was a mumsnet thread like this sometime last year where about 95% of women agreed that they hated scented pads and always tried to find the non scented ones but it can be a tricky task. I contacted Always and directed them to the tread and got a reply basically saying that they had conducted market research and their products reflected what women want Hmm

movingonup20 · 19/11/2020 16:36

@musicposy

I've been using modibodi for 3 years now, I admit I only have 3 pairs but I have a mirena and very light periods now lasting 2-3 days, one pair lasts 24 hours.

user127819 · 19/11/2020 16:39

I hate the Always pads for this reason. The first couple of days of my period I have nausea and I'm sensitive to smells and the smell of scented pads is really unpleasant. I like the Sainsburys pads as they're unscented, although they're less absorbent.

emilyfrost · 19/11/2020 16:42

This. If they’re scented, they say so on the pack. It’s your mistake for not noticing and they aren’t obliged to refund you.
Lucked · 19/11/2020 16:49

Lilets pads are fragrance free (I have just rechecked on their website).

OrangeIsTheNewTwat · 19/11/2020 16:52

Hate scented pads. Got fed up of having to sniff & inspect the packs every time I went shopping so I use a meluna cup & washable pads now.

HalfTermHalfTerm · 19/11/2020 17:03

I really don’t like my washable sanitary towels, but maybe I just picked a bad brand. They’re really bulky and uncomfortable (and hot Blush)... I wish I’d tried a pair of period pants!

The best sanitary towels I’ve ever bought are the Hey Girls ones but they’re currently £3 for a box of 10 in Waitrose, so they’re quite pricey.

SoupDragon · 19/11/2020 17:10

I use Bodyform which are unscented.

You shouldn't have to search out the small print on the back of the box to find out if they are scented or not.
