Just sorting fridge out before home delivery have a bag of carrots unopened and a brocoli still wrapped in plastic that went out of date on the 9th , hidden behind the other bits , carrots haven't sprouted and brocolli still green and feels firm , ok to use for tomorrow nights tea , couple carrots soft so will bin them

Will be absolutely fine.

Chicken I'd query veg, wouldn't even look at the date.

PurpleDaisies · 18/11/2020 20:56

What’s your question?

If it’s “is veg that looks fresh fine to use?” the answer is yes.

timeforanewstart · 18/11/2020 21:06

Yes looks fine just 9 days over but still in plastic unopened in fact only had it delivered on the 8th so didn't exactly come with much time left just realised , couple days I wouldn't query a week I wasn't sure , especially as I often find lately veg doesn't even last to best before sometimes goes squishy before.

If you bought it loose you would just eat it as no dates to put you off so do the

AliMonkey · 18/11/2020 21:09

... same

speakout · 18/11/2020 21:10

I grew up in a time before fruit and veg had a date on them.

So not needed.

I can tell if a piece of fruit ir veg is good to eat. I ignore dates on things like broccoli.
As long as it is a good colour, still firm I would eat. Same goes for carrots.
I hate to think how much perfectly good food is thrown away because of use by dates.

PickAChew · 18/11/2020 21:12

Carrots keep fine. Might need ends trimming or be a not soft. Broccoli may be OK or may smell musty or be mouldy in between the florets because of the way hex packaging holds moisture . If it looks and smells fine, then it is fine.

megletthesecond · 18/11/2020 21:14

Even a soft carrot is fine added to a veggie dish.

carolebaskinfedhimtothetigers · 18/11/2020 21:14

I can honestly say I don't think I've ever looked at a use by date on veg before! Although I do try and by loose where possible, my Tesco only does wrapped broccoli/cauliflower which i buy each week and have never even registered in my head that they have dates on.

PurpleDaisies · 18/11/2020 21:28

Yes, there was a series on years ago where Allegra McEvedy used old carrots you could literally bend them over like rainbows.

We are far too quick to throw away perfectly good veg that can be used in soups etc.

Lozz22 · 18/11/2020 21:34

I ate potatoes that were 2 weeks out of date yesterday. I'm still alive today!! I go by if isn't mouldy, mushy or swimming in liquid in the bag then it's ok to eat. Most of my soups are made using out of date vegetables

underneaththeash · 18/11/2020 21:34

I wouldn’t think to look at the date on veg. If it’s off it’s obvious.

timeforanewstart · 18/11/2020 21:35

I prefer to buy loose but was no option as i would rather buy what i needed and we struggle to use up whole bags of carrots and I eat most veg in a soup but carrot is one I don't like , will be using them tomorrow . Will check brocoli in between as has been wrapped in plastic if all good tomorrows tea

murmurgam · 18/11/2020 21:37

The only problem with old carrots is they're difficult to peel if they're bendy. Wouldn't eat them raw at that stage but they're fine chucked in a stew.

QueenPaws · 18/11/2020 21:43

Don't ask me, I've just made toast and realised it had a mouldy bit. Cut it off and ate it anyway Grin
I never get stomach bugs!

Soak carrots in water until they firm up again! 😉
