I’m in agony and can’t cope

Long term dental issue, pain always been reasonably manageable. Been due to have 3 teeth removed under sedation since February.

Last 3/4 days have been unbearable, I’m talking sitting here wailing, for those that have experienced contractions, the sort of rocking/wailing/screaming you may have partaken in. I am in floods of tears.

Finally got to emergency dentist via 111 yesterday, begged and pleaded to be seen earlier as simply could not cope, abscess in tooth. I’m terrified of the dentist (hence sedation) but in so much pain so happy for main culprit to be removed. I have the injections, which is main fear but turns outworn you have an abscess the Anaesthetic often won’t work enough to slow removal, which was the case, so I’m still in as much pain. I can’t cope any longer I really really can’t. I am sobbing, my face is now swollen which I presume is due to the pokin and prodding at dentist. Doctor prescribed pain Killers two days ago despite not really being supposed to and I wish he hadn’t because I’ve been throwing up ever since too just to make matters worse. I don’t know what to do.

I need to also point out that NOTHING is improving the pain. Not pain killers of any description, not orajel, not salt water, not hot compress, not cold compress......I can’t sleep for more than an hour. I have kids to look after. I just can’t cope with this for another day

Have you had antibiotics? I recently had an abscess and was screaming with pain. No painkillers helped, only antibiotics

I've just had an abcess, looked like a one sided hamster my face was so swollen. I had a week's antibiotics & took 600mg ibuprofen 3 times a day & 30/500mg co-codamol 2, 4 times a day. Take your pain relief regularly, don't wait for the pain to start, don't eat on that side & rinse your mouth with either hot salt water or mouthwash 50/50 with warm water. It has taken 10 days for mine to feel better, still getting the odd twinge.

xoxogossipgirl2020 · 18/11/2020 03:45

Yes dentist sorted antibiotics, she was brilliant to be fair, my face wasn’t swollen before I went, surprisingly, no fault of theirs of course, she tried to relieve some of the pressure of the abscess for me, so I’m assuming that’s why.

Yuck sounds awful, please ask the GP for some liquid morphine and anti sickness. (Important to get this)

This is one of those situations where you need to level up to a opioid based pain killer, the ibuprofens and codines won't cut this, they also mess with your stomach lining as most GPs forget to also prescribe the stomach liners. With morphine you can take say 3ml see why the pain is like take another 2ml etc and gradually find your dose.

Also it's rarely addictive, in and your case I'm sure you'd rather not be taking strong drugs.

This will allow you blocks of pain relief and the ability to sleep. You'll need someone to help with the children.

I'm awake right now waiting for my pain relief to kick in but I have a chronic condition and live with pain, currently have my period on top of pelvic agony, and post surgery morphine was the best for the night times sleeping.

I had an abscess years ago, in my wisdom tooth and I had antibiotics to get rid of the infection then the tooth was removed. Hope you are feeling better OP.

K1ran · 18/11/2020 04:34

Try putting ice to numb the pain
Also take 2 nurofen as they are anti inflammatory and 2 painkillers at the same time. Then take them just before they wear off so you won't be over taking them. Do this for 2/3 days. By then the antibiotics will kick in.

xoxogossipgirl2020 · 18/11/2020 04:55

In the nicest possible way, I am not screaming in pain because I haven’t already thought to try pain killers or ice.

I’ve been prescribed pain killers that are stronger and even they aren’t touching it. Ice isn’t doing anything. It is so unbearable I can’t just “wait for the antibiotics to kick in”

I don’t expect anybody to be able to offer me a solution, I just wanted to sound off.

Doctors aren’t even allowed to get involved anymore in dental issues, but when does it become non dental? How do they know it hadn’t spread to my jaw etc? I can’t cope

Contact the OOH dentist?

blackcat86 · 18/11/2020 05:04

Could you call 111 back for advice? Obviously some pain, swelling, soreness would be expected but I don't think you should just wait it out without being seen by someone to check all is OK

cultkid · 18/11/2020 05:07

You need anti emetics

Ask someone to go buy you bucastem in an all night chemist

Say it for migraine for the vomiting

Take the pain killers get on a rotation of

Opiate And paracetamol

4hrs

Anti inflammatory

4 hours

Opiate paracetamol

Etc etc etc

dhisreadingmypostsagain · 18/11/2020 05:25

Doctors can't get involved in dental issues no, but they can get involved in pain management issues.

Only other suggestion is to get yourself to a&e and get some morphine in.

I'm so sorry you are in pain, it's unbearable when it's like this and I know that feeling of desperation so so well.

rainbowninja · 18/11/2020 05:32

I hope you're doing ok OP, dental pain can be horrendous, worse than child birth in my experience. You have every reason to complain, I hope you get some relief soon 🤞🏻

choosername1234 · 18/11/2020 06:47

Can you find out where your local maxilo-facial unit is and then present to the A&E at that hospital? Severe acute pain IS an emergency, normal toothache is not an emergency but this is clearly beyond that.

Sussexroadleyst · 18/11/2020 06:56

When you say you've had strong pain killers, have you had opiods?

Kittykat93 · 18/11/2020 07:10

If you've tried everything and you are still screaming because of the pain you need to go to A&E.

McRibpain · 18/11/2020 07:11

I'd go to a&e. Don't mess with your help. An infection and that level of pain, but touched by oral antibiotics is a medical emergency I'd say. The worst that can happen is they will turn you away. Have you been on the antibiotics more than 2 days?

LilyLongJohn · 18/11/2020 07:16

I'd go to A&E, I'd class if as an emergency now.

stormy11 · 18/11/2020 07:19

Can you ring the dentist or 111 op? Explain your have facial swelling which is new for you - facial swelling is a dental emergency and you need to be seen. Flowers

doadeer · 18/11/2020 07:22

If antibiotics and strong pain relief aren't touching the sides I think you need to go to A&E or get the teeth out ASAP.

I've actually got a horrendous abscess on my wisdom tooth and codeine has been helping, it works for 2-3 hours then starts to throb again but I'm day 3 of antibiotics and I've finally managed to sleep.

Sounds like you need help if nothing is helping

Bagelsandbrie · 18/11/2020 07:28

If it’s this bad you need to go to A and E. Untreated dental emergencies can become septic so it’s vital you’re seen.

Hellomoonstar · 18/11/2020 07:45

I would go to a&e so they could stabilise your pain and vomiting. Prevent sepsis by helping you take your antibiotics. Then send you home.

McRibpain · 22/11/2020 17:03

Just wondering how you are?
