DD is in year 10 and her class do secret santa each year.
This year the tutor said they should still do it despite most shops being currently closed, because supermarkets are open or you could shop online.
Apparently none of the form are that bothered about doing it.

Im probably being unneccessarily bah humbug about it but I feel its a bit unneccessary. DD pointed out if we get something online she will have to pay as much in postage as the gift costs, and most of the supermarkets near us encourage people to shop alone. I wouldn't mind adding a box of celebrations in the trolley when I next do a food shop but the tutor has previously banned chocolate or sweets as a gift saying its too boring. I don't mind if its one of DDs friends but ive been furloughed/pt furloughed for most of the year and DH is SE and has seen a drop in income, Im not that fussed about spending a fiver for the sake of it on someone none of us are particularly friends with.

Gosh DD and her mates ALWAYS do chocolates and sweets because they know they will be liked! That's her class Secret Santa by the way.

How annoying. Just opt out...tell the teacher DD doesn't wish to join in...easy.

Gosh teacher encourages children to think of others and join in a Christmas tradition.

Your DD gets similar in return?

Add the gift to another order saves postage.

I keep a box of unwanted gifts in a cupboard out of sight of the kids for this very reason. I'm a regifter and proud of it.

Do a search on a supermarket site like Sainsbury’s to find a gift under £5 then create a click and collect order. Maybe something like a fun hair scrunchie or other hair things?

RosieLemonade · 18/11/2020 06:09

Has DD got a child she particularly dislikes to gift to? sounds a bit mean from both of you. You can get loads of gifts from supermarkets.

Fizbosshoes · 18/11/2020 15:08

She doesnt particularly dislike anyone but has quite a small group of friends who she would confidently know that they would like something.
Usually she would enjoy going shopping probably with friends to get something.
I didnt think we're especially mean but if money is tight (and it will be for lots of people) spending £5 guessing what a teenager I've never met might like if I cant buy chocolate and the item ends up in their mums regifting drawer....I'm not sure anyone really benefits..?
But point taken I will message some mums i know, of year 10 boys to see what type of £5 gifts they think would be suitable, in case DD gets a boy in her class as I think DD would have a better idea of what's an acceptable gift for a girl.
