Any cake decorators about; how would you do this?

Dd2 has asked for a Minecraft cake this year but not Stampy made from "pixels" because I did that for dd1, one year.

I've seen this one that seems simple (pic) on Pinterest, and thought I'd try and model a Stampy out of icing to sit on top of it.

I wondered; would you do the black icing round the bottom first, or the white on top? & what would be the easiest way to make the block effect? (Maybe cutting separate blocks & wrapping the black round the cake like a ribbon?

Tia :)

The one in the image is full white icing. Black layered on top as a collar. Red square placed on top. The black and red have been rolled very thin and possibly gently rolled once on to press them in more (though I'd be very careful as they could easily warp)

I'd cover the cake in white fondant first (I'd actually just do a nice buttercream layer, as I'm not a fan on the taste of fondant - but it is neater). Then for the black, would cut the blocks out with a cookie cutter and then as you say - wrap it round the cake like a ribbon

Aah, thank you both. That's really helpful!

MyDucksArentInARow, I don't think I'd bother rolling once they're on the cake tbh. Dd will be chuffed with it 'as it comes' (I hope Grin)

That cake is trickier than it looks, particularly the black around the side. if you roll out the black and cut it into shape, it will stretch while you’re trying to put it on and then be misshapen which would drive me bonkers (although you may not be the crazy perfectionist I am 😂)

The easiest way to do it would be to buy some black florist paste, which rolls super thin and dries very hard. Roll it out, cut out a piece for each side (measured to fit), let it dry overnight and then stick to the sides of the cake. Nice crisp lines, no risk of stretching.

For the black layer, I'd probably do each side as 4 individual panels. If you leave the side edges a little longer, and then trim them flush with the white icing once on the cake. The panels could be put on the cake straight after rolling and cutting, or could be left to harden a little, which might make it easier, using a very small amount of water to stick it to the cake.

Good luck! I'm sure it will be fab Smile

Alternatively, if you use black sugarpaste, let it dry out a little before placing it so it keeps its shape more, it will stick with a small bit of water.

Ooh, the four pieces for the sides sounds much easier. I'll measure my tin & make a paper version tomorrow maybe just to see. I can imagine it being quite tricky to wrap round the whole thing at once.
