Can Americans (or people who live there) tell me what sides you have at thanksgiving?

In particular, is sweet potato casserole a side or a dessert?
The recipe I'm looking at has candied pecans and marshmallows on top!
Looks delicious but I can't find if it's a side.

Do you just serve everything up together? Like I keep seeing pumpkin pie and pecan pie as "sides" for thanksgiving dinner?

@mamaatthegym yes! Personally I love sweet and savoury so I am very excited to try this. I've got all the ingredients 😄
DH not so keen! 😆

Sweet potato pie is a nice alternative to pumpkin pie too.

@GlowingOrb can you share the cornbread mushroom stuffing recipe? Sounds amazing!

We make sweet potato bake, but no marshmallows, just a sugar, butter and nuts combination on top. So yum.

I made biscuits and gravy today and omg! Ridiculously tasty!! Kids loved it too.

I recommend trying this British/American South fusion that just occurred to me.

One of the best ways to have biscuits is to make a sandwich with ham, so a "ham biscuit." My favorite British food is the bacon roll, discovered many years ago when I was a student in Scotland. British style back bacon is very hard to get in the States; we only have the streaky kind. I think that a Southern style biscuit split and stuffed with back bacon would be a very fine thing. You would need to make big "cat head" biscuits.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 22/11/2020 17:58

This is an amazing and very easy cornbread recipe.

@SenecaFallsRedux that would be the most amazing concept for a food stall/pop-up business. (I will certainly be trying it, once I've perfected my buttermilk biscuit skills)

Thanks for the drinks recommendations!

I had the foresight (smugGrin) to get a tin of pumpkin a few weeks ago from my Tesco delivery. Pleased I did as it's been out of stock since Wink. I already have a sweet pastry pie shell on my next order!

This thread is making me very hungry! Another Brit in California here - we are having a tiny Thanksgiving for 2 this year but are still cooking a traditional meal - I've ordered half a turkey breast from the butchers, which will still be about 5lbs of meat.

We haven't decided on sides yet, doing that today, but probably a selection from here: iamafoodblog.com/thanksgiving-side-dishes/

I saw this on twitter last week showing favourite sides by region - really fascinating! twitter.com/grahamelliot/status/1324483123963461632

@Strawberrypancakes

Thanks for the recipe, I think it would be popular in our house, can't really go wrong with chocolate Smile
Your food looks really great. I'm going have a go on Thursday.

mathanxiety · 23/11/2020 04:29

A less sweet pastry pie shell would be better with the pumpkin pie.

Use a flour to butter ration of 2:1, add salt, and cold water to mix, and Bob's your uncle.

LemonDrizzles · 23/11/2020 04:36

Sides : honey carrots. Marshmallow yams (sweet potatoes) are a traditional side.

Dessert: lots of pies. Lots

Frannibananni · 23/11/2020 04:44

When we were there for thanksgiving I had the best green bean casserole and Mac and cheese. I think everything had added cream or added cream and cheese.

TerraMirabilis · 23/11/2020 06:50

We will be having turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, green bean casserole, some type of corn side (corn as in sweetcorn to Brits), cranberry sauce, stuffin' muffins, and normal stuffing. Dessert will be choice of pumpkin pie, apple pie, or pecan pie. I've never had the sweet potato and marshmallow thing, I assume it's regional.
