If you have an electric hob and you like it, talk to me

Considering changing my hob in a few weeks when I get my kitchen revamped. Currently have a gas hob. I am not willing to pay for an induction hob and then have to buy new pans, it's not worth it to me for the amount I use it. My parents have had a standard electric hob for years and they like it, but I've not heard anyone else whilst reading online say this. If I don't get electric I will stick with my gas and maybe see if I can replace the ?top round things that the pan goes on.

So if you have a standard electric hob, do you like it? I couldn't get worked up about the fact it might take a few extra second to heat up, that's not an issue, just wanting some opinions. Thanks

I much prefer an electric hob to gas. I always have the ceramic so its much easier to clean than gas.
Yes it takes a bit longer to warm up but that's good because now I don't burn things if I take my eyes off them for two seconds.

fauxflowers · 17/11/2020 16:42

I'm also wondering if they are expensive to run, or not much different to a gas hob?

I had electric ceramic hobs for years due to either living off grid for gas or in blocks where gas wasn’t permitted for cooking. They’re fine for ordinary cooking and I really like that they’re way easier to clean than gas hobs. Couldn’t comment on cost as energy prices would have gone up anyway since I last had gas, but unless you cook a lot of stove-top pot stews for hours on end I doubt you’d notice much difference.

Have induction now and really really rate it, would recommend. I didn’t have to change all my pans either, they were fine.

I have a halogen hob, it’s as controllable as gas and easy to clean. It’s the only electric hob I’ve ever been able to use

Bananalanacake · 17/11/2020 17:05

Don't like them, too slow, but I've got used to mine now. I live in Germany where I'm starting to think gas hobs are illegal as I've never seen one over here.

Holothane · 17/11/2020 17:08

I love my job in rented accommodation it was my dream to have one, when the council moved us on disability ground the in-laws gave us money to help with moving and at long last my own Fokker, I refused to have those awful solid rings I paid for a leisure range cooker, insured it for five years I pay year now, I still love it.

Holothane · 17/11/2020 17:09

Sorry misspelling meant to say in rented accommodation

JoeBidenIsGreat · 17/11/2020 17:11

No gas mains on my road, so electric only option.
Now that I'm used to it, gas seems weird, so hard to control - but I only encounter it in holiday lets, tbf.

Fewer safety issues with electric. Easier to clean the hob.
Gas is cheaper, faster.
Lot depends on the actual cooker, does it allow truly low heat when gas.
I have a feeling that if I had a choice I'd choose gas, but there's not a lot in it.

GlumyGloomer · 17/11/2020 17:25

I had electric for years, then went back to gas. Electric was a dream to clean and the flat ones double as extra counter top when not in use. Yes it takes longer to heat but you really get used to it and don't notice. I wish I hadn't switched back tbh.

planningaheadtoday · 17/11/2020 17:37

I won't use gas. I'm too lazy to strip a gas hob down to clean it each day.

My advice if you can, get a top of the range induction hob. The heat is instant and they are so easy to clean.

ListeningQuietly · 17/11/2020 17:40

Check if you really need new pans - most modern ones are Induction ready
and the running cost difference of induction is substantial
and they are MUCH SAFER than any other type of hob

ohdearmymistake · 17/11/2020 17:57

I love my ceramic hob, wouldn't want to go to gas. I can't say I've notice that it takes longer to heat up mine seems pretty quick, but I've had it so long now I've forgotten what gas is like.

BertieBotts · 17/11/2020 18:01

Yes I was going to say check your pans. Unless you have copper bottomed ones they generally work on induction. You can check by seeing if a magnet will stick to them.

lyingwanker · 17/11/2020 18:03

I used to only have gas hobs but now I'm totally sold on the electric ones. I don't even notice a difference in the extra time heating up at all. The only slight downside is that they do take a little while to cool down so I have to remind the kids not to put their plastic plates on the hob after they've eaten their dinner.

ListeningQuietly · 17/11/2020 18:06

Induction hobs heat quicker than gas
and cool MUCH quicker than gas.

I love the fact that if a pan boils over on an induction hob, you pick it up, wipe the hob dry (it will be cool enough to touch) and put the pan back down.

Gas hobs have all sorts of safety risks
as do old style electric
but induction does not
and its the cheapest to run by a long way

NannyGythaOgg · 17/11/2020 18:12

The only thing that persuaded me away from gas was an induction, which I absolutely love. Any other sort of electric is slow and unresponsive. Induction is so quick, so responsive and you can really control the settings.

You might not need new pans. Have you tried a magnet on them.

combatbarbie · 17/11/2020 18:19

Has electric and gas hobs in rented, now in our own home we have an induction and I love it! The safety aspect alone that it shuts off as soon as the pan disconnects is great with having young kids, the speed of cooking I have noticed a massive change. Sooo much easier to clean, looks nicer. I have even just ordered an induction kettle as this is a more economical and quicker way.

Oblomov20 · 17/11/2020 18:51

Induction. Best thing ever.

fauxflowers · 17/11/2020 19:06

I am pretty sure my pans are aluminium and apparently they don't work with induction, they're as good as new as I only bought them all brand new when we moved here end of May, we have already stretched ourselves with the kitchen as I couldn't help but keep adding extra things that we weren't originally going to get, I need to be firm with myself at some point as DP just goes along with whatever I suggest!

Where were the pans from - you might be pleasantly surprised

Twospaniels · 17/11/2020 20:23

We had pans which we bought from Habitat back in about 1995 and they are fine on our induction hob we bought 2 yrs ago.

Had gas before this and hated cleaning it.

Had ceramic electric hob before that and hated how slow it was and uncontrollable.

Go for induction

Oldraver · 17/11/2020 21:10

Yes to induction if your pans are fine.

When a pan boiled over I wiped the job and left a paper towel under the pan. It's surreal to see it still working and the towel still be fine

fauxflowers · 17/11/2020 21:10

They were just from Argos, I've tried looking at my order history but I must of bought them in store so annoyingly can't check the details!

If you specified Aluminium then yes, you have a problem

but £30 from IKEA and you are sorted Smile

geekaMaxima · 17/11/2020 21:27

A halogen ceramic hob is the next best thing to induction - to be honest, I can't tell much difference between halogen and ceramic when cooking on it. I wouldn't use a ceramic job with regular electric elements because they are slow, but halogen is great.

Halogen is as quick to heat and as responsive as gas, but with none of the safety problems and none of the faffing about to clean it properly. Using gas hobs in holiday lets etc. is a right pain by comparison.
