Thinking I might have left the hotplate on...

I am sure that I turned it off but my brain is sitting here conjuring images of mushrooms burnt to a crisp, pan over heating and then starting a massive fire problem.
Cannot get home and check as I am on the way to an appointment.
Please would people help me drown out the little worrying voice and it's implications?

I'm sure you haven't, but I'm glad I'm not the only one who does this. I have often returned home if I'm going out for the day to check the hotplate or iron aren't on or a tap running or the door is locked.

At worst you’ll just have a warm house when you return, and a higher electricity hill this month.

Appliances don’t tend to just catch on fire nowadays unless faulty. If it overheats it will probably just trip the fuse.

I was once absolutely certain that I'd left the front door unlocked just as I started a 5 hour shift at work.

Was a wreck, rang DP (who didn't live with me at the time and worked over an hour away) to ask if he would pop over in his lunch to check - he obviously didn't Grin.

Rushed home after work, with images of the front door swinging merrily open and half my stuff gone playing on my mind, and found the door firmly locked Grin.

It'll just be your mind. Things like turning the stove off and locking the door is second nature, so we often forget we've even done it because we're so used to just doing it out of instinct.

I do this all the time. I have been known to carry my straighteners around with me if I'm out for the day and have taken photos on my phone of things switched off so I'm sure and can look back for reassuranceHmm.
No neighbour or local friend who has a key?
Chances are it'll be off esp as you remember turning it off!
Could be you're feeling nervous about appointment and your brain is catastrophising?

I once went home in my lunch hour from central London to suburban London because I was convinced I had left my straighteners on...I hadn't.

Thanks people. Wish I could carry the hot plate around so it wasn't sitting there possibly burning the house down. Suspect that would be quite some effort though.
There are other people in the building but none has a key.
Don't think I should contact the landlord, he has a key but ummn, dragging him out to check would be a bad thing I suspect...

I do this! I think it’s because we do things so automatically that they don’t register in our conscious mind.

A couple of times though I have got up in the morning to find the (gas) hob still lit since the previous evening’s dinner Shock which makes me worry about it even more!
