If you have ever walked out of a job?

Thought this would be an interesting thread as I was very nearly tempted today!

Have you ever walked out off a job and what was it that made you walk out?

OP posts:
ilovemydogandMrObama · 18/11/2020 13:03

No me, but a few jobs ago, one of the guys working nights, on the ground, every Saturday night, would get drunk and ring the on-call manager and tell him he could stick his job and proceed to tell him about all the problems with what the people in the office expected him to do. (He wasn't drunk when he was working). He would quit, every Saturday night but would always turn up on Monday morning, having given the boss, 'a piece of his mind...'

Apparently it was a tradition Grin

purpleleotard · 18/11/2020 13:17

Not me but my replacement.
I taught in FE. The college thought it would be a good idea to move the labs and get a one ft lecturer instead to two 60%.
So I took the package and walked.
My replacement turned up mid summer hols to start the role. Had the show around by the technician and saw what a huge task was ahead. At coffee time he said he had a headache, went home and didn't return.
Left the college in the lurch. Such a shame...............

Oldraver · 18/11/2020 13:28

Yes I'd worked at a place for 12 years axons was getting increasingly frustrated, I'd had odd days off as I couldn't face going in. One Sunday night I burst into tears at the thought of going in and it was a friend who said " if it upsets you this much you need to leave"

So I went in normal times Tuesday, my supervisor saw me and scowled and cleared off so I just cleared my things, said goodbye to immediate colleagues and walked out

I emailed my resignation

LuckyAmy1986 · 18/11/2020 13:46

Yes, I was being bullied by the senior partner's daughter who was the office manager. Walked out, and found a much better job a few days later. Best thing I ever did!

islockdownoveryet · 18/11/2020 21:18

Another job I accidentally quit , when I was a student I worked weekends at a supermarket on the till.
I'd been there 2 years and was a good worker got along with the staff .
I'd just finished college and got a full time job in a office .
On the day I got the job I rang my supervisor at the supermarket to explain but he spoke to me so badly shouting down the phone how I'd left him in a tight pickle . I was just dumbstruck I couldn't explain that I'd be still doing a few weeks notice he was shouting at me that much he didn't let me explain. It really upset me after I'd had great news . I think I naively though he'd be pleased for me that I had a job in something I'd studied. Anyway when he'd calmed down he just went ok then buy and I just thought fine .
I had to go in and collect my pay and they were really shitty with me then too .
It was a casual weekend job before zero hour contracts and minimum pay so wasn't a lot of hours or pay for very hard work .
I have honestly never let anyone down in my life and worked my arse off but some employers thinks they own you and when you walk are fuming .

When I was 19 and a student, I worked part time in a local Spar. It was minimum wage and we were treated like shit, denied holidays, expected to work 45 minutes past when we were paid, but couldn't be one minute late into work, etc. And because it was a bit of a dodgy area we had a lot of shoplifters in. The manager expected us to challenge all shoplifters but I wasn't going to stand up to six foot tall blokes who would probably stick the nut on me for so much as looking at them funny, over a £4 pack of beer.

Anyway one day there was a bloke who came in, really wide set, tattoos on his face, smoking, pissed, and started pocketing things. He said "I won't be paying for these love and if you've got a problem with it you can raise a complaint with my fist". So I ignored him. I did ring the manager though who lived across the road. He came over - he didn't challenge this bloke himself, who was still there, but he went MENTAL at me for staying quiet. I was 19, he was 45 and an experienced manager. I walked out. He looked at me and said "who I am supposed to get to watch the shop til closing" (closing was 6 hours away). I said "someone who gives a shit" then ran away and avoided the shop forever more Grin he didn't pay me for the last 4 shifts of worked. I laughed when he went bankrupt.

vanillandhoney · 18/11/2020 21:49

Yep, twice. I have autism and in both cases I'd got it in my head that I had to leave because I couldn't cope anymore, so I went in, handed in my notice and never went back.

ShreksAuntie · 18/11/2020 21:55

I walked out of a job when the boss referred to me as a “stupid cunt” in front of a customer. He refused to apologise so I got my bag and left. He screamed after me “you can’t leave me. I pay your wages”.

Arsehole.

IncludeWomenInTheSequel · 18/11/2020 22:09

I worked for one day in the office of an insurance company.

I sat there for a whole day and nobody spoke. There wasn't one word said. Utter silence.

I thought I'd gone deaf.

OrangeIsTheNewTwat · 18/11/2020 22:09

Yes, twice.

One time because another employee lied to the manager about me & said I'd done something that she'd actually done. She was obviously worried she'd cocked up. The manager just believed her as she'd been there longer, despite me trying to explain what had actually happened, & gave me a disciplinary on the spot. I finished my day's work, got all my stuff, & on my way out I told the manager that I wasn't willing to be treated like that. She asked me how she was supposed to staff the shop & cafe the next day - I replied that she'd better get the other employee to cover as I obviously wasn't trustworthy. I'd only been there a few months so it was no big loss to me. I got a much better, better paid job within a fortnight & stayed there many years.

As a teen, I also left a warehouse (picking & packing) job after 2 days. The pay was NMW, I had to get the train & be in for 6pm, & it was a 12 hour shift. Shifts were apparently cancelled at short notice if you didn't pack fast enough. On the 3rd day I tried to get out of bed & was in so much pain I couldn't stand up straight, due to enforced poor lifting practices (having to repeatedly bend over & stretch to grab things out of the bottom of massive bins). There was no other way to complete that particular task. On the 2nd day the guy next to me told me that he was impressed I'd made it in for the 2nd day, apparently many new starters didn't.

sparklepink · 18/11/2020 22:10

today I ditched a client, if that counts. Long overdue! Sad and difficult but necessary.

mrsbyers · 18/11/2020 22:12

Yep being expected to do the work of 3 and not having any reassurance about my job safety

mrsbyers · 18/11/2020 22:13

Oh and I’ve left a few temp jobs on the first day or two as not suitable

Cheesypea · 18/11/2020 22:19

I walked out of a job in a coffee shop as a student. The owner would shout and scream at all of us. The final straw was when his belovid Chelsea lost a match and he went nuts as us all, he threatened not to pay me so my brother had to call him.
I should have walked out of a work placement however my university kept persuading me to stay. I walked out in the end anyway. The experience was really damaging and it took me 2 years to repeat the placement.

greyhills · 18/11/2020 22:32

Three times Grin

I'm finding that as I get older, my tolerance level for bullshit has reduced considerably.

Job 1 - refusing to authorise holiday request for the day before my wedding because my boss decided she wanted the day off (that was the last of many straws).

Job 2 - I was freelancing and the bloke I was working for was not taking my advice. He'd engaged me as a specialist in the field and then decided he knew better...

Job 3 - underpaid, undervalued, the person who owned the business was as thick as shit. The final nail in the coffin was that she accused me of being a liar, which I am most certainly not.

Good riddance to the lot of them.

GhostsInSnow · 18/11/2020 23:01

Twice.

The first time a small shop where the manager was an utter wanker. He did fuck all and slept in an upstairs room all day. I finally snapped, walked out and called the boss who owned a couple of these stores when I got home. Told her why I'd left and to check the cctv in the upstairs room. Within three months he'd been fired and she'd closed the shop.

The second was the Co op. I took the job on the basis of the advertised one evening and two afternoons a week. Imagine my surprise when suddenly the supervisor in charge of shifts was giving me Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights so she could go and party with the students that also worked there.
I complained. Was assured it was an oversight yet when the following months rota appeared I'd got all the same shifts again. Wrote my notice there and then.
I helpfully worked out a month for them only to be repaid by dodgy supervisor pulling some scam where she'd told head office id taken holidays when I hadn't so she could divvy up the extra shifts to her mates. It took me three months of fighting to get the pay I was owed.

Othering · 18/11/2020 23:08

God yes, quite a few times actually! I was very hot headed as a youngster. If I felt even remotely slighted in any way, I'd literally just stand up and flounce, often with a 'fuck you' for good effect! I'm a lot calmer these days 😁

CarinaMarina · 18/11/2020 23:15

Just the once. Third rate, back street IT company which provided rather outdated catalogue/ordering software to online retailers, who were sparse at the time (pre 2000) and of course provided the tech support.

I confess I wasn't the most tech savvy person but they knew that, and I naively thought that I'd get some training on the systems etc. Well I didn't, I was amazed at the clunky system and couldn't grasp it at all. The 2 other girls in the office hardly spoke, one of them was insufferably rude and pompous and twice when she heard me trying to assist with a query on the phone actually screamed at me to PUT THE PHONE DOWN. So I didn't actually get to assist anyone.

The main boss was a superior prick who had no patience for me and kept humiliating me in front of the others, drilling me with questions I couldn't possibly answer until I felt very small.

I broke down in tears one morning at the thought of going in and my BF at the time (now DH) just hugged me and said, don't go back then. We'll sort something out.

I didn't go back, but I did call and say earnestly that the job just wasn't for me. Funny, they said "The girls will both be DEVASTATED, they LOVED you."

Yeah, bollocks love.

AGeeseGoose · 18/11/2020 23:15

An office temp job I had after Uni. I was hauled into the office and shouted at for being one minute late due to my bus breaking down. I didn’t go back. The weird thing was the manager who did the yelling had been perfectly pleasant to me all day - weirdo

greyhills · 18/11/2020 23:41

about as useful as a marzipane dildo Grin Grin

This has amused me very much - thank you @JohnMcCainsDeathStare

JohnMcCainsDeathStare · 18/11/2020 23:44

I don't like marzipane that much. Nor as it transpired then DP but I stuck through THAT shitshow for another four months because I was convinced it was 'the depression talking' and not that he was Mr Useless.

Bunnybigears · 18/11/2020 23:47

Agency work on the packing part of a production line a friend and I got the job to tide us over at Uni. The product was still very hot when it got to us but we weren't allowed gloves the sellotape machine was broken and you were in constant danger of slicing a finger off. We couldn't keep up with the speed of the belt we were constantly being shouted at and told any product that fell off the end because we hadn't packed it was coming out our wages. Then they decided to speed the belt up. Our eyes met and we just turned as one and walked straight out listening to the product falling off the end of the line as we went.

Molly333 · 19/11/2020 00:04

Yes i was working for a large high street dept store on a skin product counter. The beauty manager used to hover when customers came to look or buy then when they left she shouted at me for not upselling 2 more products. It was hard sell and i hated it. After another shout off i went to lunch and never came back . I have always been wary of skin care selling counters since

Chickenwing · 19/11/2020 00:07

I walked out of retail position on my.3rd day. A junkie was screaming in my face and I just thought "nope."

DipSwimSwoosh · 19/11/2020 00:09

Eurocamp. Aged 19. I walked all the way from France to England.
