Hi all, sorry for such a random thread but I wanted to know the answer to the above question really and google was no help. Is the chinese 5 spice pot (schwartz etc) the same as the stuff they use in morrisons, amongst others, when they sell fresh 'chinese style pork'? I love the taste of this but would rather make my own than pay extra for a flavouring I can create myself. Thanks!

It isn't.

But Aldi sell sachets of the red Chinese marinade for 50p and it's amazing (( it's where the gravy etc is )). It coats 8 large chicken thighs so goes far too.

For that price it's pointless trying to cobble my own together

Ooh yummy that sounds good. I shall call in on my way home from work in the morning, thank you!

Usually basically the same but maybe with extra sugar I’d think

I think the marinade stuff would have a lot more fat and sugar in it than just the spice mix, which is just spices. So probably honey, sesame oil, soy etc etc

No you ned Char Sui sauce which you can buy in bottles mostly in Asian stores or make your own - it's basically

Hoi sin sauce
soy sauce
honey
brown sugar
red food colouring
garlic
and a little bit of five spice.

Although @WhatWouldYouDoWhatWouldJesusDo option from Aldi sounds a whole lot simpler!
