What can I spray on the grass after clearing cat poo to stop the buggers coming back?

We didn't go in the garden for a month and found nearly half a bin bags worth of cat poo! I've bought a car scarer that lights up and looks like an owl, it's ultrasonic and also has a normal alarm. I realise many cats just waltz right past them so what can I do to neutralise the residual smell so my garden doesn't smell like a litter tray to them?

I've seen review photos of those green gel crystals with poo right on top of them and powders will just wash away in this weather. I'm thinking peppermint oil will stick around longer but it would also get on their paws and I don't want to risk making them sick, anybody know if it will?

I need help before my husband dumps the bag on next doors step and causes world war 3!!!

We've had great success with this www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B073Q12GM5?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share&tag=mumsnetforu03-21

@keepon mine kills adult birds too. Not just babies. And he eats them so he doesn't do it purely for fun. Hth 👍

We got a water sprayer attached to a hose with a sensor on it which was great.

lockdownbreakdown · 16/11/2020 18:14

Sprinklers or turn the hose on them. Only needs doing a couple of times. My cat craps on one of our neighbours lawns so I have suggested that to them . She refuses to be an indoor cat so what to do?

Todayissunny · 16/11/2020 18:17

@keeponkeepinon I get where you are coming from - kind of. I'm also sick of and disgusted with the mess cats leave in our garden. But without the cats we would be overrun by mice and worse. It happened recently in an almost cat free town in Germany.

Chewwithyourfuckingmouthclosed · 16/11/2020 18:49

I've never known a domestic cat kill a mouse.
My mum's terrier on the other hand... Grin

I saw those sprinkler scarecrow things, they look very good but are quite pricey. Worried about leaving a hose connected to them over winter as we usually drain ours and put it in the shed to stop it freezing. I suppose they would work well in warmer months though.

Going to get husband to pee outside tonight and get some chilli and olbas oil tomorrow as they seem the cheapest options. Will start cheap and work my way up the ideas list.

I did toy with the idea of a cage trap loaded with yummy treats to capture them. Then neatly bag up their poo and tie it to their collar for them to take back to their owner where it belongs! GrinGrinGrin.

I absolutely love that idea! Grin

Cats are notorious for losing collars I doubt the poo would make it home TBH. Probably end up in someone else's garden...

Maybe I could knit them a festive Christmas kitty jumper with a neat little pocket on the back then 😂

@MrsMigginsMate you could but I get the impression you don't know too much about cats if you think they will let you put a jumper on them. You would not come out alive. Shock Grin

CottonSock · 16/11/2020 19:13

Following. They shit all over my grass. I was collecting leaves today and got it everywhere so am currently raging. I can't use ultrasonic as dd can hear it and we have guinea pigs. Will try chill, but guess we need dry weather. Laying out mesh helps. I put it down where they shit the most.

AnneElliott · 16/11/2020 19:38

You need your own cat op - it will scare away the rest of them!

My domestic cats catch mice - well anything that moves really. My 15 year old who can't jump had 2 mice by their tails in the summer - they weren't dead and she helpfully let them go inside the house!

I know this was probably a joke, but I bloody hate this attitude. Generally if people don't have cats it's based on an active choice not to have cats Hmm
We neither want our own nor to be forced to deal with other people's.

MrsMigginsMate · 16/11/2020 19:58

Oh gosh I could never have my own cat, I've seen too many mangled half alive 'gifts' brought in by the cat at MIL's house, gives me the ick! Shock

Adult human wee has worked for me. Morning wee may be best as stronger.

Stroller15 · 16/11/2020 20:06

Agree with male urine. My DH pees in a bottle and spray it around the garden, only thing that works.

MrsMigginsMate · 17/11/2020 21:54

Update. No poos so far! Husbands wee combined with the flashing owl sonic device is doing the trick! Put olbas teabags out tonight as well for good measure.

Sprinkler with motion sensor attached. We rigged one up with a raspberry pi. Worked well
